06.07.19: AFL2 St.Marys v St Sylvester’s
With key performers like Micháel McCarthy, Conor Meaney and Alex Wright injured, Aaron Lynch tied with Dublin U20, Andrew Cunningham withdrawn just before throw-in along with some players on holidays this fixture was potentially challenging.
A tentative and robust opening set the tone for what was to follow and after fifteen minutes, despite having the better chances, the score was tied at three points each. In that period the full forward line of Jack Hazley, Sean Daly and Dave Sexton gelled well together to create some good chances and were ably assisted by Mark Finnerty throughout. From that point on the away team played with more creativity and this was rewarded with a Ross Hazley goal. This was followed up with some good scores from Daly, Sexton and the impressive Daniel Brennan to leave seven points between the teams at the break.
With the chance to seize the initiative further Ross Hazleygoaled again early in the second half following some good work from Pearse Gibney and Jack Hazley. This was followed up with three Dave Sexton points (two from frees) to see the Malahide team pull away. As the game grew more physical scores were rare for both teams for the middle part of the half such was the stop-start nature of the game. Throughout the Sylvester’s players managed the game well and maintained discipline before opening up the gap again towards the end of the match with more points from Brennan and Jack Walsh. To crown a great individual performance Jack Whelan scored our last point following a free from Mark Hazley. More good news was the senior debut of Seán O’Donnell who entered the match in the second half replacing another young player Daniel Deneher.
The seniors next match is a hugely important home fixture in Broomfield on Wed July 17th at 7.30pm vs Na Fianna. Players and management really appreciate all support.
Scorers: Ross Hazley 2-1; Dave Sexton 0-6; Daniel Brennan 0-3; Sean Daly 0-2; Jack Hazley 0-2; Mark Hazley 0-1; Jack Whelan 0-1.
