U13 hurling against Bray Emmets

On Sat last Syls u13 hurlers took on Bray Emmets at Bridgefield knowing that a win would secure promotion back into Div 2 next season. Bray are a strong side who had already narrowly beaten us in Bray earlier in the season and who had already won the league this year.

Syls started excellently and never backed down from their bigger and more

physical opponents. Through tenacious defending they established dominance
but couldn’t convert the chances and hard work into scores. Syls scored 4
points from play in the first half, all coming from intelligent use of the
ball and selfless running off the ball. Indeed had Syls shooting been a
little sharper they would have easily doubled this tally. Bray had to be
more economical in their use of possession to stay in the game. They were
helped on their way through two goals that on other days would have bounced
the other way. Syls had some good fortune of their own scoring a goal from
a deflected long range shot. The half time score was 1-5 to 3-2 with Syls
going in knowing they didn’t deserve to be chasing the game.

The second half was a much more even affair in terms of scoring with both
sides trading some wonderful points in what was a great contest. Bray had
their backs to the wall as the Syls forwards constantly drove at them
looking for goals to seal the victory. In this period the Bray goalkeeper
was the busiest man on the pitch, aided by the ridiculous amount of sand in
the bottom goalmouth. With time running out Bray went 4 points in front and
things were looking bad for us. However to their immense credit our lads
kept driving on. They were rewarded first with hard won points from frees
and then with two late goals. The goals were mirror images of each other
involving brave and direct solo running from wide on either and then a calm
accurate finish on the run. The final score was 4-7 to 3-7.

This was a great team effort and credit is due to the whole squad and
mentors/helpers who put in such good work all year.

This squad of players has developed into a real team over the course of the
year. They have learned to train and play for each other. The team is
characterized by the huge respect that they have for each other. From game
to game different players have done the scoring and others built the
platform through thankless man marking and defensive work. If somebody was
injured or couldn’t make a match, the rest of the squad got on with the job
so well that it was hardly noticed.

We set different targets for each of our players based on where they are in
their own development and where they want to go as sportsmen. They are all
succeeding in hitting those targets. Each member of the squad plays a
vitally important role in the development of this team and they are still
too young for us to pick out the future stars. To mention one player over
another would be to belittle the efforts of others and undermine the team
ethos. 3 of our players made the Dublin Development Squad this year
(despite Div 3 teams only being given 1 nomination) but there are many more
who can comfortably make the step up. Their progression this year has been
excellent and we hope they stick together and continue to develop through
the coming years.
