Congratulations to Clare and Cork
Cracking All Ireland Final replay, congratulations to both teams on a classic game rounding off a great season for the GAA. Hillary managed to track down Donal O' Donovan after the game and got this pose for a photo. Unfortunately I coudnt get one of myself with him but when we shook hands and I congratulated him he said "thanks for all the training out in Malahide"...
U15 hurlers reach Division 2 decider
Syls U15 hurlers played away to Ballinteer on Sunday last in the U15 hurling league Top 4 play off semi final. In what was a dogged encounter Syls U15 hurlers came out on top against a fine Ballinteer side by a scoreline of Syls 2 goals and 12 points to Ballinteer 1 goal and 12 points.
Syls co-host All Ireland Ladies 7's
Once again Syls co-hosted the 7's with neighbours Naomh Mearnóg and, once again they got great weather to make for a great days football. Well done to all who participated and helped.
Congratulations to The Dubs
Great day on Sunday for Dublin - here's a few pictures from the day.
Hurlers in Senior Championship Semi Final
SHC B SF Parnells 2-09 St Sylvesters 1-06 Our first foray into senior hurling came to an honourable end in Parnell Park last Saturday. In a team decimated by emigration and injuries we nonetheless stayed with a talented Parnells outfit and finished the game on the offensive looking for the goal to keep the dream alive.
U12 Football Review
Despite missing a number of regulars our U12 footballers fielded 4 teams on Saturday with a total of 53 players pulling on the Syls jersey in the penultimate round of league games. Our A footballers were missing 6 starters from their previous game and going up against the unbeaten league leaders, St Vincents, that proved too much of a hurdle to climb. Vincents ran out handy winners and so we must settle for second place again this year in Division 1.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes
Senior Hurling B championship semi final Our odyssey in our first senior hurling championship came to an end at the semi-final stage in Parnell Park on Saturday evening. Parnell’s got the goals that ultimately made the difference but they were made to work very hard for every score. The obvious disappointment with the result reflects the level of ambition to succeed at this level and in time we will reflect on this campaign very positively.
Thanks from the O'Brien Family
Mr. Michael O’Brien and the O’Brien family wish to thank most sincerely the members of St Sylvesters GAA Club, who attended the removal of Maureen to St Sylvesters Church, those who attended her funeral Mass and also for the many expressions of sympathy from members of the club.
Minors good win at Ballinteer
MHC B Ballinteer St Johns 3-07 St Sylvesters 2-11 A single point win in difficult windy conditions built on a good defensive display in the first half when we only conceded a single goal and trailed by a point at half time. With the wind favouring us in the second half we took the lead early with points form Shane and Colm Boran before a Colm Byrne goal gave us some daylight.
Pictures from U10 hurling
Three teams took on Fingallians in Bridgefield on Saturday.
U8 hurling blitz at Malahide Castle
The U8 Squad played in a Hurling Blitz on Saturday in Malahide Castle. St Sylvester's hosted Skerries Harps & Fingallians, 5 pitches were setup and referees provided for the event. Everyone got a medal and fun was had by all. Photos of the players getting their medal. Eammon Burke hurling U8 mentor presented the boys with their medals.
Inters lose to Nhm Barróg
AFL3 St Sylvesters 0-10 Nmh Barróg 2-08 (or something like that)
Classic Syls Golf Classic
When you get the weather in Malahide you are guaranteed a great day and we got the weather for our 2013 Golf Classic at the lovely Malahide Golf Club. We had 35 teams participating, fabulous prizes from Wrights of Marino, on course food from Spring Valley Meats and the Scotch Bonnet, we had Risteard Cooper back at the club, he's a funny guy, and a great evening. Many thanks to all the sponsors and players for supporting Syls and big thanks and well done Elaine, Ronnie, Declan, Brendan, GV and Dave for a job well done.
Enda O'Briens mam has died RIP
I regret to inform you that Enda O'Brien's mother died during the night-may she rest in peace. I'll let you know the funeral arrangements as soon as I have heard them. As some of you know she has been ill for some time and on Thursday or Friday last she was brought back to hospital. Enda's father was a former member of Inisfails.
2 Good Wins for U13 Footballers after Summer break
The U13 footballers put in a very confident performance against Raheny last Saturday afternoon winning 4 -9 to 1 - 7 to follow on from an excellent victory a couple of weeks ago against Nh Mearnog. The lads adapted well to the wet conditions initially with excellent performances in all positions. However, one special mention for Jamie Costello - it was only his second outing in goals and he made three outstanding saves.
Inters take the Loving Cup
LOVING CUP FINAL - St. Vincent's 0-07 St-Sylvester's 0-09 Our Intermediate footballers claimed their first (and hopefully not their last) piece of silverware with a hard fought win over a very competitive St. Vincent's side in PNU on Saturday evening. The rain that had been threatening all after finally arrived right before throw-in so the conditions ensured that this game wouldn't be the high scoring shootouts that the previous two meeting between these sides were.
Club notes September 9th
Senior hurling Championship quarter final Naomh Olaf 2-9 St Sylvester’s 2-14 Reaching a senior hurling championship semi- final is a massive achievement for the club. This is our first year to play at this level and despite losing some of our most experienced players to emigration the management have developed the young talent in the club to compete at the highest level. Managers, Eamon Clancy and the long serving Leonard O’Carroll and Pat Keogh deserve great credit for their commitment and dedication. An away victory over Naomh Olaf’s was a monumental achievement they can justly be proud of.
U15s win in Championship
We won well over Ballymun on pitch2 in Broomfield
Minor footballers win in the Championship
MFC A St Sylvesters 2-11 Lucan Sarsfields 3-04 Mostly impressive display, we gave up two late goals giving us a little scare, to start our four team group in the championship. Two first half goals by Dylan Connolly set us up after we had been quite wasteful and we led by four at the break.
Hurlers reach Senior Championship SF
SHC B Nmh Olaf 2-09 St Sylvesters 2-14 Somewhat surprising easy victory over the top seeded team, we led from the 12th minute and won well to reach our first ever Senior Hurling Championship semi final. Martin Ormonde and Ciaran Falvey with two late goals gave us a cushion to withstand a disputed goal (through the top of the net we claimed anyway) against us and a late goal and a point by Olafs.
William (Willie) Colgan RIP - Anne Sexton's dad
We send our deepest sympathies to Anne Sexton on the passing of her dad, Willie Colgan. Funeral mass is 10.00am Wednesday morning at Portmarnock. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
White men can't jump!!!
Bernard sent me this picture of Jack against the Meath U17s on Saturday. Then I spotted one of Brian McCarthy on his way down over at Brigids.
Dub Hub great evening at Syls
FM104 and Vodafone brought the Dub Hub to Syls on Friday evening. The place looked brilliant and all credit to Gary Penrose for the whole setup., it went very well. The Bomber Liston was the guest of honour with Jayson Sherlock, Cian Murphy and Ballymun manager Paul Cullen.
A few good friendlies
Seniors and minors playing plenty of friendlies in preparation for Championship - lots of good points from play in a senior game against Athy, minor hurles had good games against Whitehall and Castlenock and the minor footballers had a good win over Meath U17s
Inters draw, stay top
AFL3 St Brigids 1-10 St Sylvesters 0-13 We led by six at half time after dominating with a bit of a breeze in our backs but we probably should have been further ahead. Alan blazed across the face of the goal and a few disputed wides costing us. Brigids came at us in the second half but good defense from Higgens, Peacock and Shaloe kept them to a few points until we got ourselves into the game.
U15 girls at Christine Bollard 7's
Syls Girls Under 15's played in the Christine Bollard 7 a side Tournament in St.Maurs last Saturday competing against teams from all over the north county and beyond. In what was a very enjoyable day, the girls performed very well coming second in their group with only one defeat to Donaghmore-Ashbourne by one point in a very tight game.
John Cox and the Mayo Minors from '82
Gathered at Croke Park on Sunday last for the Mayo V Donegal match was the Mayo minor footballers of 1982. Included in that team and shown in the photograph second from right in the front row is a very young John Cox who represented Mayo that year with great distinction. John is involved with Syls for the last 6 years with this years U13s and has been a great help in other club matters also.
Enda Flaherty . . . hurling captain and dual star
Enda Flaherty has been at the heart of hurling at Syls for more than 10 years now . . . captain, centre back, previously captain and centre back of the Inter footballers . . .
Joan Rooney RIP (Declan Rooney's mam)
We would like to express our condolences to Declan Rooney and his family on the passing of his mother Joan in County Down yesterday. May she Rest in Peace. I will post funeral arrangements when available.
Junior Hurlers lose to Boden
JHC C QF St Sylvester’s 0-8 Ballyboden 2-15 The game started with a fine point from play by a very lively Mannix Ryan for the home side. Ballyboden soon got into their stride and took the lead with some good long range points. They were finding it easier to pick out the man in space and their hurling was very tidy. The also had a potent attack that picked off two fine first half goals and that was the difference between the teams at half time
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes 25th August
There was heartbreak for our Dublin representatives, Sinead Aherne and Niamh McEvoy with Cork coming out on top in the All Ireland semi-final and also for Lucia Hughes with defeat for the Dublin under 16s in the All Ireland final, also to Cork. Congratulations to all for your achievement in representing your county with great distinction at the highest level and there are even better days ahead.
Hurlers lose to classy Crokes
AHL3 St Sylvesters 2-12 Kilmacud Crokes 5-16 Crokes went ahead early and were very hard to hold while we were slow to get going. Our second half display was more encouraging and it was great to see Andrew back after a long layoff.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes August 19th
Out top two adult football teams playing in divisions, one, and three are both leading their league tables and the junior A team moved up to joint leaders in division six with a win on Saturday. With just a few games left to play we are in for some exciting matches over the coming weeks. The individual management teams deserve great praise for their effort, commitment and cooperation in pooling resources.
Minor Championship Fixtures
A few tasty looking fixtures in two football and the hurling championships - best of luck
Big weekend for Syls girls in county action
This Saturday is a big weekend for our girls lining out for Dublin. Birr in Offaly is the venue for two big games. At 2.30pm Sinead Aherne & Niamh McEvoy line out for the seniors v Cork in the All Ireland Q/F. This will be followed by the U16 All Ireland Final where our own Lucia Hughes lines out for the Dubs girls also against Cork. Best of luck girls from all in Syls.
The Dub Hub at Syls Aug 30th - tickets required
We are delighted to inform you all that Syls Clubhouse will host the FM104 Dub Hub on Friday 30th August at 6pm to discuss the up coming Dublin V Kerry All Ireland Semi Final.
Syls footballers top three leagues
Ok, nothing won yet and we were a little deflated at the senior game Saturday but our adult footballers are top of AFL1, AFL3 and AFL6 this morning and that is well worth a mention . . . well done to all the lads and here's hoping we celebrate with some silverware in a few months.
Win over Service puts Syls top of AFL6
AFL6 St Sylvesters 0-10 Civil Service 0-05 Congratulation to lads, staying up with the Inters and Seniors . . . sorry I didn't get to see this one.
Seniors lose but stay top
AFL1 St Sylvesters 0-11 Ballymun 1-17 The score reflects the game pretty well, we never really threatened Mun as they continued to reverse last years results. Ballymun brought a greater intensity and it was great to see their Dubs stars starting a league game in August, Dean Rock was on fire early on with some excellent scores (sorry lads, I know I wasn't supposed to be admiring). Ross, Glen and Fionn stood out for us and Nigel hit most of the scores.
Inters win to go top of AFL3
AFL3 St Sylvesters 3-13 Clanna Gael Fontenoy 0-06 An early Aiden Relihan goal and a few quick points with the wind in our backs gave an early lead that Clan were never going to threaten. We played a very fluid brand of football moving the ball quickly and seldom giving it away. We are well poised to win promotion and looking as strong possibilities to go up as champions - big game away to Brigids on 31st and home against Barrog on 14th Sept.
Heartbreak for Dublin Minor Ladies
Congratulations to our own Niamh Harney and Ciara Lynch and their Dublin Minor colleagues, just pipped at the post in what seems like very unsatisfactory circumstances in Mullingar on Wednesday evening . . . see attached report from Hill16
U12 C Footballers win Whitehall Tournament
Congratulations to the U12 C footballers who took part in the inaugural C team tournament hosted by Whitehall on Wednesday evening. This was a 4 team tournament for C teams within the U12 leagues
Seniors go top of AFL1
AFL1 St Maurs 1-06 St Sylvesters 1-10 Good win over a determined Maurs out in Rush in a re-fix of the rained off game earlier in the summer. Took us a while to figure out their sweeper defence but Nigel, Eugene and Ken hit a few long range points and we lead 6 to 2 before a goal brought Maurs back.
11 August 2013 St Sylvester’s GAA club notes
The Dublin hurlers made us proud with a fantastic performance in today’s All Ireland semi-final. In what was a great game of hurling we came out on the wrong side of the result against a very good Cork team. Dublin will face Cork one more time this year in the ladies football All Ireland quarter finals on August 24tt
Syls Red Army . . .
Lot of infiltrators knocking around Syls these days . . . . and I never did post that photo of our Farney Army . . .
Bridie Finneran RIP . . . mother of Mary Ryan
We send our condolences to Mary Ryan on the passing of her mother Bridie Finneran. Funeral mass is 11.00am Saturday morning at Donnycarney Church . . .
Dublin Minor Ladies snatch a draw in All Ireland Final
After another fantastic week of Gaelic Games in Croke Park we traveled to McDonagh Park Nenagh Co. Tipperary to see two fantastic Minor Girls finals and absolutely great value for money. The B Final was a thriller between Clare & Laois with the O'Moore County winning by two late points in the end.
Des Barnes RIP - one of the greats.
Well done to the players and members who formed guards of honour for Des on Thursday. We had the Junior team from the '80s that Des managed, Brian's U14s at the clubhouse and Declan's U15s and Ladies at the Church. It was a sad day for the club but there was a great turnout of respect for Des and his family.
Niamh Harney starting in All Ireland Minor Final
Syls Niamh Harney starts at corner back tomorow Mondaywhen Dublin take on Galway in the Minor Final 3:15pm in Nenagh. Ciara Lynch is in the subs . . . good luck girls and good luck Dublin
Small piece on Des Barnes by Eddie Moore
Des Barnes was a very talented footballer who played for St Sylvester's GAA Club from the mid 1960's until the early 1970's. He was too young to be a member of the 1963 Junior Championship winning side. His two brother in laws John Skinner Ryan (who died earlier in the year) and Paddy Ryan were members of that team. That side went on to Intermediate in the late 1960's and Senior in the early 1970's and Des was a part of this very successful period.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes July 28th
The senior football team got a deserved share of the points with league leaders St Brigit’s during the week and followed up with a handsome victory over Na Fianna on Saturday.
Ryan hat trick gets Minors over Lucan
MHL2 St Sylvesters 4-08 Lucan Sarsfields 1-09 A second half hat trick of goals for Paul gave us a surprising win over a Lucan team we never beaten to continue our recent good run. The win was built on a super defensive effort in the first half when Lucan looked like they would overwhelm us but we kept the goals out and were happy to trail by only four, 1-05 to 0-04 at the break.
Inters win again at Clann Mhuire
AFL3 High scoring win away in the Naul on Saturday evening.
Seniors win well at Na Fianna
AFL1 Na Fianna 1-06 St Sylvesters 3-15 The game was competitive for about 20 minutes before a couple of great saves by Robbie and goals at the other end from Ken Sweeney and Mark Brennan gave us daylight and we didn't look back. Someone said Na Fianna had a very young team out but, in fairness, we had plenty ourselves and were very happy with our win. I commented elsewhere that we had four Hazely brothers finish the game, a remarkable feat for any family following in the footsteps of the Barnes (Martin, Des, Brian and Dec) and more recently the Cleeres (Cian, Russy, Nicky and Airy).
Interview with Eoin Cooney
The first of our Juvenile Interviews - Eoin is a member of the U15 football and hurling teams and also plays minor hurling, U16 football, plays for Malahide U15 Rugby and plays all codes for Scoil Iosa . . .
Junior A's go top in Div6
The Junior A team went top of AFL6 on Tuesday night after a battling 5 pt victory over St Maurs. Despite playing with 14 men for almost three quarters of the game, the lads dug very deep and played some fine football against a very strong Maurs team. It was another great team performance.
Girls in contention in Div2
The adult girls followed up on their league victory last week at home to Clontarf with a big win away to Round Towers Clondalkin on Wednesday night. The girls delivered with a big score line of 6-14 to 2-6 and this victory keeps them in the hunt for league honours. Next up is Clann Na Gael next Wednesday in Broomfield.
Could have won . . . could have lost
AFL1 St Sylvesters 2-08 St Brigids 2-08 Another high tempo high quality game that really could have gone either way. Brigids were going better in the final quarter with four points on the trot to lead by two. Ken Sweeney won a penalty which Nigel converted but again Brigids got the touch on a high ball into our square and we were relieved to see it hit the top of the crossbar and go over to level the match.
Inters win again . . looking really good
AFL3 We won by a point in a nail biting finish against Ballyboughal with the lead changing hands regularly in the second half and leaving us right in contention for AFL3 and promotion.
Syls girls with Dublin Minors
Congratulations to the Dublin Minor Ladies and to Syls Niamh Harty and Ciara Lynch reaching the All Ireland Final, their third successive All-Ireland ladies football minor A championship final on Bank Holiday Monday, August 5 after they stormed to a 34-point victory over Donegal in Saturday's semi-final at Kingspan Breffni Park. There was a great Syls following in Cavan to support the girls and Peter snapped a marvellous picture.
Stacey Cup Winners
The pictures tell the story . . . the Junior A team took hom ethe Stacey Cup tonight winning against Templeogue Synge St out at Dolphin Park . . . A truly battling performance was the key to our victory over a very strong Templeogue Synge Street team. In a low scoring encounter, every score mattered and we came up trumps at the death to win by a single point.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes
Declan Mc Grath is living proof that nice guys can finish first. His junior A football team have really made great progress and now added the Stacy Cup to their list of achievements. The team is a great collection of characters, ages, hurlers and very good footballers and is a great advertisement for the club. Great stuff
Paul Kavanagh Child Welfare Officer
Paul, a qualified welfare officer and councillor has generously volunteered to act as Child Welfare Officer, replacing Podge Bannon who had to resign due to time committments.
Paul McBride wins Ulster Boys Amateur C'ship
Great achievement for Paul following in the footsteps of Rory McIlroy and Graham McDowell . . . keep going Paul.
Dublin Ladies in the news
A couple of nice articles on the Dublin Ladies from the Gazette and the Herald supplied by Peter Hickey.
Hurlers draw and a loss
AHL3 Castlenock 2-11 St Sylvesters 2-11 AHL3 Nmh Barróg 3-15 St Sylvesters 3-05 A good draw mid-week was followed by a below par performance against a slicker looking Barróg on Saturday evening at Kilbarrack.
Dublin Ladies Summer Camps
Dublin Ladies Gaelic are again running two Summer Camps aimed at players in the 9-13 age group. Coaches are drawn from some of the best players in Dublin including our own Niamh McEvoy. Week1 is in St. Margarets GAA Club July 29th -August 2nd. Week 2 is in St. Perigrines GAA Club from August 12th -16th. Cost per week is €55 See camps@dublinladiesgaelic.ie<mailto:camps@dublinladiesgaelic.ie> or ph 0892060452.
Loving Cup Final not played
Unfortunately the referee didn't show (unusual these days but I didn't hear any more) so the Loving Cup Final between Syls and Vincents was postponed . . . big disappointment for the lads and supporters.
Inters up to 3rd in AFL3
AFL 3: Ballyboden St Enda's 1-07 St. Sylvester's 0-11 Our Intermediate footballers kept their recent good form in the league going with a hard earned 1pt win out in Ballyboden. Many of the lads playing on Saturday evening would have been involved with the minors a couple of years back when they were piped in the last minute of the MFL 1 final so Saturday's win will have had added significance for these players.
Minor hurlers win at Clontarf
MHL2 Clontarf 1-09 St Sylvesters 3-10 We haven't beaten Clontarf very often over the past 8 years so it was nice to finally get one over them and continue our 'almost' excellent run of 4 wins from the last 5. Apart from a late goal our defense was excellent, Karl Stacey sweeping up all round him, Matt and Cian very tight, Danny didn't put a foot wrong and the half line of Thomas, Alan and Andrew holding a very fast opposition.
St Sylvester’s GAA club notes July 14th
Dublin became triple Leinster Champions with victories for the senior men and ladies football teams to add to the last week’s senior hurling win. Our own Sinead Aheane put the seal on the ladies win scoring a superb goal and a point at the start of the second half. Niamh McEvoy, back after serious injury, played her part coming on in the second half with her usual powerful runs at the opposing defence.
