Senior Ladies outstanding against Clontarf

Syl’s Ladies are a bit like the girl in the poem, “when they are good they are very very good but when they are bad they are horrid”. In the League so far, they were very very good against a good Clanna Gael side and horrid last week against an ordinary Man o War. This week, they put on their best performance so far against a really strong Clontarf, winning by 1-16 to 2-8. And this was without the injured Niamh McEvoy and Nicole Owens.

There were many highlights in this game, starting with Kate Sullivan’s brilliant goal after just 2 minutes followed 2 minutes later by an equally brilliant save at the other end by Michelle Walls in goal. Kate went on to score 3 further points and Michelle made at least three more outstanding saves. Also outstanding was the free taking performance by Sinead Aherne, with 6 out of 6 plus 3 more from play.

Our defending was also outstanding, especially in the last quarter when Clontarf threw everything at Syls. Unfortunately, a couple of tackles were over zealous and the referee awarded 2 penalties. Clontarf converted both, the only times Michelle was beaten in goal. Two defenders that caught the eye were Anne Clarke, who played a constructive role at centre back and the young Amy Phelan whose skill and determination made a big impression. At midfield, Áine McDonald won a lot of ball, including some impressive high fielding while Louise Ryan made herself available for passes and carried the ball to good effect.

In reality, every player on the team including the subs who came in could be mentioned because everybody made an outstanding contribution to what was a great team effort.
