Syls Minor Girls – An excellent League campaign...

Nuala & I had the privilege of looking after this year’s Girls Minor squad. We were placed in Division 2 which was always going to be a stern test with such a young Minor squad – only 6 of the 24 players involved were 2nd year Minors.

We prepared well for the start of the season (or so we thought) but the opening game of any season is always a step into the unknown. Our opponents for the opening game were Clontarf and I’m afraid things did not go to plan losing by a narrow 2 point margin. However it was a game that we learnt an awful lot from and the great things about this group of players is that they are always willing to listen and learn. After the opening loss we proceeded through the remainder of the league campaign unbeaten with wins over Foxrock Cabinteeley, St Brigids and O’Dwyers as well as 2 draws against Clannagael Fontenoy and Round Towers Clondalkin. This run qualified us for the Top 3 where we would face off against Clannagael Fontenoy and O’Dwyers again. A victory against Clannagael set up a ‘winner takes all’ game away to O’Dwyers.

Without a doubt O’Dwyers had been our toughest opponents all campaign. Although we managed to beat them earlier by the narrowest of margins (1 point) in an incredible game of football, we knew to repeat the feat away again would be difficult. However what this group of players have in abundance are skill, heart and resilience. In another cracking game O’Dwyers just proved to be that bit stronger than us on the night and took the League title. We had to be content with Runners-Up.
