Syls Minor Ladies lose narrowly in 'best game of the year'

Minor Championship Shield Division 1 Final Venue Chanel/Parnell’s Ground Sunday 17th November 2013. St Sylvester’s 2-12 Ballyboden St. Enda’s 2-13 Mary O’Connor of the Dublin Ladies Board said that this was the best game she had seen all year and anyone who was there would have to agree. I saw Mick Stuart out at the game, always a great supporter of the Ladies game and I’m sure he would agree

Syls team was 1 Cliona McNamara, 2 Aoife O’Flynn, 3 Niamh Harney, 4 Luchia Hughes, 5 Leah Harrold, 6 Kim white, 7 Cliona Hamill, 8 Ciara Lynch (Captain) 9 Louise Ryan, 10 Aine McDonnell, 11 Daniell Lawless, 12 Graine McGinty, 13 Emma Lynch, 14 Eimear Treacy, 15 Emma Sullivan, Subs 16, Seanny Reilly, 17 Ailish Meaney 18 Laoibhse Brannigan, 19 Maura McGrath.

This game was on a knife edge all the way through. For the girls last game as a team it was great to be the narrowest margin away from victory against the most successful team in Dublin Ladies GAA in the last 9 year (The All Ireland Féile Champs of 2009)

The general consensus after the game was that it was not that important who won this game but that after 9 seasons we were on a par with the best in Dublin. It was any one’s game and in the end Ladies Gaelic Football won out big time.

From Syls point of view we have to thank the under age players who still have a couple of minor years in them. Cliona McNamara in Goal outstanding against some of the best forwards in the Country. Also Aoife O’Flynn, Luchia Hughes, & Cliona Hamill, in the backs. Also outstanding in the forwards among the younger age players Danielle Lawless.

Player of the match has to be Eimear Treacy who scored 1-7. Score of the game has to go to Emma Sullivan who scored the second last pint late in the game at a crucial time from an impossible angle out on the right that would have made Maurice Fitzgerald proud.

Seanna Reilly who is committed to International running came back to give the girls a dig out in the last few games after some great displays with Scoil Iosa Senior Girls GAA Team. Watch out for this team in the months ahead with many of our Syls Minor Girls on it. Can they repeat the All Ireland success of 2002.

Scorers on Sunday were Eimear Treacy 1-7 “Paddy McGinty’s Goat” sorry Grainne McGinty 1-0, Ciara Lynch 0-1, Emma Lynch 0-1, Danielle Lawless 0-1, Seanna Reilly 0-1, Emma Sullivan 0-1.

There was a wide spread of scores among the forwards, Pat Spillane would be very happy with this.

This team came up from nursery level and have finished their 9 seasons at the very top. There are teams coming through from the nursery in Gaelic Football, Ladies Gaelic Football, & Hurling in Syls each year and if this keeps going with the support of parents the Clubs future is guaranteed.
