U10s help TCD open new grounds

St. Sylvester’s GAA club was admirably represented at the official opening of Trinity College Dublin’s GAA Sports Pitches on Santry Avenue on Sunday 12th March. Aogán O Fearghaíl performed the ceremonial duty.

The main act was a Dublin Senior Football team challenge match against Trinity College. Ross Hazley captained the Dublin team to a convincing victory over the students. Ross was joined by fellow Sylvester’s clubman Gary Sweeney in the Dublin line-up. Both players shone for Dublin and were instrumental in the victory.

St. Sylvester’s Under 10 Boys were invited to participate in Go Games in both hurling and Gaelic football before the senior match and during half-time. The Under 10’s team made a day trip of it, traveling by coach from Malahide to Santry and back again. 37 players participated in these games with a squad for each code. Our boys performed well in their matches and enjoyed the pitch-side view of the Dubs in action.

Dublin senior manager Jim Gavin took some time out to sign autographs and pose for photographs for the very excited Sylvester’s juvenile players. GAA President Aogán O Fearghaíl, who performed the official opening, also humoured our boys with high-fives although it’s not clear how well our boys knew him!

The highlight of the day for our Under 10’s was Dublin captain Ross Hazley and Gary Sweeney taking time out directly after the game to spend time with them – signing autographs and humouring them with selfies. It was fantastic to have two of our own senior players provide inspiration to this enthusiastic group on a day that the kids will remember for a long time.
