Senior Men Maintain Winning Run in AFL2
Missing a sizeable contingent due to exams, travel and some injuries, minor players Josh Bannon, Ben Gaynor and Sean Gibson were drafted into the senior panel with Josh Bannon entering the action in the second half. Another young player, Jack Whelan made his full debut at corner-back and acquitted himself very well throughout.
With Raheny setting up with at least one full time sweeper throughout the first half breaking through and overcoming a mass defence proved difficult. Even so the away team enjoyed a lead after twenty minutes. Coming into half time Raheny equalised courtesy of some free-kicks conceded owing to over zealous tackling which referee Sean McCarthy adjudged to be enough to award frees.
A bright start to the second half ensued with a more energetic St.Sylvesters getting ahead of Raheny defensive lines owing to the pace of Karl Archibald and Alex Wright. The overlapping runs and support of Dan Deneher and substitute Dan Brennan offered more headaches to the Raheny defence resulting, ultimately, in Mark Finnerty’s goal. With more success on the Raheny kick-out and pressure in the middle-third the next goal, created by Alex Wright, was a simple finish from Micheal McCarthy. The closest Raheny came was to six points and despite some pressure near the end as Raheny searched for goals our senior men maintained composure and focus to record a valuable away victory. The next senior match is at home vs Round Towers on Wed May 22 at 7.30pm……as always all support is welcomed by the players and management.
