Walnutt and Donnelly double act for 4ths

Walnutt and Donnelly double act for 4ths

AFL9 A very impressive display giving the high riding 4ths their fifth win on the trot in Broomfield on Wednesday. Stephen Donnelly gave a master class in free taking off the ground, one in particular from the right side off the outside of his boot raisin a great cheer. Ciann Walnutt raised another mighty cheer when he solo'ed up the middle, took it on the return and hit a brilliant strike to the net off the right post. Sean Halligan, not to be outdone, nailed a free from outside the 55, a huge effort that came down with snow on it.

Minor footballers win a tight one

MFL D2 A late Luke Troy point gave us the minimum margin and a good win in a very competitive game. There was a great crowd there to see a Brynn and Luke inspired drive and a few other handy forwards.

Senior Footballers convincing against Templeogue SS

AFL1 St Sylvesters 0-13 Templeogue Synge St 0-06 A very solid half back line of Ronan, Collie Mc and Scrappy and mid field of Shane and Ross laid the foundatiopn for our first win of the year. Facing a cold strong wind in the first half we dominated and led by 7 to three at the break and it could have been more. We were slow to get on top in the second half, Synge St getting back to two points before we took ove and finished with five on the trot, Foy and Garry looking for goals on a few occasions.

Congrats to Stephen and the Dubs

Smashing game in Navan last night saw the Dublin U21s overcome a fine Kildare team in a very exciting Leinster Final. Conditions were poor with a heavy misty rain and very slippery underfoot and it looked like the game would die a death when Dublin hit 2-02 without reply mid first half but fair play to the Lillies as they took over for the next thirty minutes, going ahead by two points and holding Dublin scoreless until the fiftieth minute.

Seniors disappointed at Raheny

AFL1 Raheny 3-12 St Sylvesters 3-11 We rallied from an eight point deficit to draw level, went behind to a free and Dominic dropped a long levelling effort just short to leave us disappointed losing our second game in the league. Pity really, I felt we deserved the draw for a great fightback but we also made it very difficult for ourselves. We went behind early but a goal fro Niall Coughlan and points from Gavin and Micháel brought us back to two points behind at the break.

Comeback goes unrewarded in senior league

AFL1 St Sylvesters 1-15 St Vincents 3-16 The game ran away from us in the last five minutes after a brilliant second half performance saw us tied up at 1-15 to 2-12. Syls played three quarters of the game with 14 players after Aiden Lawlor was very unlucky to see two early yellows. Vincents scored a penalty and another goal giving them a nice cushion but we pointed two goal chances, Gary dropping the ball on the crossbar with Michael poised then Nockser blazed over with the goal at his mercy.

Senior Football draw at Thos Davis

AFL1 Thomas Davis 0-12 St Sylvesters 1-09 A disappointing second half after a heroic first half performance saw us lucky enough to get a draw over a solid Davis team. We faced a wicked wind and rain in the first half and played some very controlled football. Davis went 6 to 2 up when Barry Ryan tenaciously won a penalty which Gavin finished nicely. Davis finished the half with a point and Syls defending bravely. Of course, the rain passed and the wind dropped at the break but we opened with a lovely Shane O'Connor point and looked poised to take control.

Junior Football Medal Presentation

Congratulations to our Junior A team on a very successful year winning the B Championship and gaining promotion to Division 5. Dublin great Ciaran Whelan (Declan McGrath called him one of the two best mid-fielders of the modern era alongside another friend of St Sylvesters, Dara O'Shea) presented the medals and we thank him for taking the time to visit Syls. In a very nicely managed event Shane did a lovely pen picture of each of the lads, Declan McGrath recounted the three year journey from Div 7 and many of the incidents along the way, Tricky set out the challenge for the coming season, Niall Kelly was awarded Player of the Year to a resounding applause and the place was decorated with some great pictures to remember the successes. U21s leave it behind them

U21A FC St Sylvesters 1-07 Kilmacud Crokes 1-09 We led by a single point with two minutes remaining but couldn't hold on for the win which, for us at Syls, was a great shame as we felt that, yet again we had a team capable of competing with the best. Reduced to fourteen in the second minute we recovered to lead 4 points to 3 at the break but really should have been 5 or 6 up, missing opportunities we might normally hope to score but the rain and underfoot conditions conspired against us. Jack Hazely goaled a few minutes into the second half and things looked better for us.

Junior footballers into AFL6 playoff final

AFL6 Playoff SF St Sylvesters 2-07 Fingallians 1-07 Ciaran Mugser Murray saved a penalty late on to save our blushes after we made hard work of finishing out a game we had led well and looked home and hosed.Fins led by two points at the break having played with a strong cold wind in their backs but Syls soon levelled and pulled away after the break and goals from Dylan Connolly and Kevin Casey gave us a cushion but a Fins goal made it close to the end.

Inters win convincingly over Finnians

AFL3 St Sylvesters 1-12 St Finnians (S) 0-07 Comfortable win in the end following an equally good win over Brigids mid-week has us almost safe in AFL3 after a rocky period recently. Defensively we were excellent making a string of good blocks mid first half to stop a Finnians onslaught when they were going well. Up front we took a string of good points late in the first half and a Conor Colclough goal at about 50 minutes closed out the game. A win over Boden or a few other possibilities will keep us out of the relegation playoffs.

Minor Footballers draw at the death

MFC B GrB A last minute pointed 45 by Dylan Connolly secured a deserved draw in a lively championship group game against Lucan Sarsfields in Broomfield. It was a helter skelter finish to a pretty good game. We trailed by three going into the last 10 minutes, Simon pointed, Dylan pointed, Lee Duffy missed a sitter, Luke Troy hit the crossbar then Duffy goaled, only for Lucan to respond with an immediate goal leaving it to Connolly to tie it up with almost the last play.

Seniors go out to Vincents

SFC St Sylvesters 1-09 St Vincents 3-12 We trailed from start to finish and had no great complaints about the result, losing to a Dermot Connolly inspired Vinnies who, at times, looked every bit the All Ireland Champions that they are. We recovered from a slow start and looked in a good position at 1-07 to 1-05 at half time but a quick Vincents goal after the restart knocked us back. Again we responded with two fine points but a bit of genius by Connolly yielded another Vincents goal and we were chasing from there. We had a good spell mid second half but great work by Gary, Eoin Fanning and Micháel just didn't yield enough scores. One of the ladies team said how proud she was of our team and I can only agree. We came up against a fine team. See the report from Hill16
