Mixed weekend for footballers

Surely one of our poorer displays over the last few years, a weakened senior team was well beaten by an equally weakened Ballymun at Broomfield. We stayed in the game against the wind in the first half but about four wides when scores were on plus a soft goal given away left us five adrift. Ross was black carded (I've no idea why) and that upset us. A few good points by Eoin Fanning, senior league outings for David Sexton, Ronan Palmer, Mark Hazely and Mark Finnerty were probably our highlights.

Stephen Cunningham wins Leinster U21F

Congrats to Stephen starting at centre back for the U21 Dubs against Meath last evening at Potlaois. The Dubs were much more economical with their scoring opportunities and ran out 5 points winners.

Good day for our footballers

Congrats and well done to Robbie Brennan and his senior team getting their first win of the season in impressive fashion over at Dolphin's Barn against a usually strong Templeogue SS. John Murphy's Inters were also very impressive beating St Marks in Broomfield while both Junior teams also recorded good wins.

Minor As just pipped at Fingallians

MFL Div2 We lost our first outing by a single point over in Swords. Padraic was a little disappointed, felt we might have stole it in the end. The Minor Bs were disappointed to get a walkover from O'Dwyers.

Great kickoff with Football 7's - it's all about the Club.

We had a great football competition to kickoff 2014 on Saturday - 14 teams, about 120 playing, hurlers, ladies, minors, juniors, inters and seniors with a lot of ex players and friends. We even had a couple of sendings off and a few more who pushed their luck. It was a miserable day weather wise but that didn't take away from the craic. Finished up with a good old shindig in the club. Congrats to Ciaran Roche and Donal Hayes for the idea and the execution - I sure hoppe we do it again. Check out the picture albums, they tell the story.

Football team management news for 2014

It's been a busy few weeks but we now have our adult team managers in place for the coming year and we're looking forward with great anticipation. We welcome Robbie Brennan and Dave Clare to the senior football team along with our own Cathal O'Donnell and I'll post a better introduction in a few days. Former Syls greats John Murphy and Mark Green are taking on the AFL3 challenge hoping to continue our quest for a second senior team. Shane Cowley and Declan McGrath continue with the AFL6 team after a very competitive 2013 and we welcome Andy McDonnell back to Syls football, teaming up with Brian Danagher to bring renewed spark to our AFL9 team. Shay Byrne and Padraig Quinn are stepping up from Minor B last year to Minor A and they also welcome Chris Ryan back after a few years off. Paul O'Toole and Philip Reid step up from U16 to Minor B. Best of luck to all of you.

St Sylvesters Football 7's

The club is holding a 7 a side “Battle of the Generations” tournament in Broomfield on Sat February 1st as a kick off to the 2014 season and as a fundraiser for the club. Team squads will consist of 10 people, from minor age-group and upwards and is open to non-members, male and female and even non-GAA players. We’d like as many people as possible to play and certainly all eligible club players should try to turn out.

Eoin Fanning came on at half time for the Dubs and made a big contribution as they opened up a six point lead, Eoin getting one. Micháel McCarthy was a late sub for DCU and hit a brilliant opportunistic goal before Davy Byrne added a point for the students to steal it.

Seniors fall at final hurdle

AFL1 Title Game - ST BRIGID'S 2-10 ST SYLVESTER'S 0-12 Disappointment again as we lost our second final in two years. This time we were well in the hunt and looked like winning with 10 minutes remaining leading by two points but we didn't add on the scores when we had the advantage. Brigids goaled after some indecision in our backline and kicked on with a couple of points. Great crowd, great fast game of football, lots to be positive about. Congratulations to Brigids, they competed hard all season. Congratulations to Gabriel, Paul, Giddy, Tom, and Ciaran and all our team, it was a long hard season and, pushed Vincents to a point in the Championship (and they may win the All Ireland, good luck to them) and went within 10 minutes of winning the league. Of course we're disappointed, who wouldn't be, but we're very proud of our team no doubt we will come again next season. Well done all.

U21s lose a good game to Na Fianna

U21FCA semi-final St Sylvesters 0-11 Na Fianna 2-12 Big crowd in Broomfield expecting a cracker and they weren't disappointed, at least in the first half. This was U21 at it's best, end to end, fast flowing football, some great scores - make you winder why we under value this grade so much, big shame. We were even stevens in the first half until Fianna opened us up for a goal and we never really got close after.

Seniors draw again with Boden

AFL1 Semi Final AET St Sylvesters 1-17 Ballyboden St Endas 2-14 Just like Ireland v All Blacks we were hit with the ultimate last second sickener with Boden scoring a scrappy goal with the last kick of extra time. U21s reach semi-final with classy display

U21 A FC St Sylvesters 4-10 Castlenock 0-08 Yes, it was a comprehensive win over a Castlenock team who had defeated Vincents in the previous round and looked pretty sharp early on. Jack got us off to a great start high fielding a superb cross field ball from Alan Foy and burying in the net. Castlenock steadied themselves and scored three good points but the Syls rearguard got on top and we knocked off six straight points to lead 1-06 to 04 at the break.

Apparently the day of the dual player is over, even at club level or so we are to believe! But see attached, 8 Clare senior hurlers winning county football and getting to Munster Club Final! Surely if they can do it we should not let our kids be told that they must choose one code over the other........ Ernie
