Defence Coaching Session -Monday 23rd Broomfield
There will be a Coaching Session for all Mentor/Coaches in Broomfield next Monday 7.15pm organised by Brian Talty , Head of Adult Football and delivered by Donie Buckley who is a highly regarded inter county coach. Donie is particular renowned for his coaching in relation to tackling and defending. Please encourage all Mentors to attend. All are welcome. Inter footballers bow out to Ballyboughal
IFC B Ballyboughal 0-16 St Sylvesters 0-12 Four point loss in a game where our shooting let us down and the excellent former Dublin U21 Gerry Seavers missed nothing for the home side. Beautiful evening in North County but we seemed to take the wrong options on the smallish field.
Seniors lose in Tallaght
AFL1 Thos davis 0-16 St Sylvesters 0-07 Wet evening, bit of a damp squib from our perspective, Mick Shields kept a clean sheet, the score says the rest.
Two wins, two losses in Championship Football
Mixed week for our adult footballers, the Seniors and Junior Bs winning while the INters and Junior As both lost. The seniors had a comfortable five point win over UCD at Parnell's ground, Michael McCarthy and Gary Sweeney both in good form up front and Collie Mc and Conor Quinn the pick of the backs. The Inters were a little unfortunate to lose by a goal to Finbars at Rollestown. A poor first half left us 6 points down at the break after having the wind and hill in our back.
Inter footballers win at Vincents
AFL3 We won by two points after a very solid display and the team is starting to come together well following an equally impressive win over Ballyboden in our last outing.
Senior footballers good win at Ravens
AFL1 Fingal Ravens 2-07 St Sylvesters 0-17 A very assured display, much more encouraging with Championship coming up in a couple of weeks. Midfield of Jack and Ross Hazely were dominant throughout, hard hitting Barry Ryan and Ian St Ledger gave us a more solid feel in the backline while Brian Sexton and Gary Sweeney were excellent up front, Gary contributing six or seven points from play and Brian, Micháel, Ed and Niall all contributing. good scores.
Seniors draw with Castlenock
AFL1 St Sylvesters 0-06 Castlenock 0-06 Tight game where we trailed fro most of the game against a well organised tidy looking Castlenock. Gary Sweeney opened with a lovely long range point, but generally our forward play was a bit ponderous and we didn't threaten their goal. Shane and Ross worked really hard and kept us in it in the middle while the defense saved us this week, Michael Shields, John Peacock and Barry Ryan all making decisive saves, great to see Collie Mc back and going well and Dave Galvin also finding form after a long injury. Both sides probably happy enough with a draw in awful wet conditions.
Inters win at Ballyboden
AFL3 I don't see the result posted yet but I hear the Inters had a good win away to Boden and we had a lot of players back. Word is there will be no living with Meaner but fair play as we had a rocky start and are clearly getting it together now.
Congratulations to Ballyboden and Na Piarsaigh
Great display by Boden in winning the All Ireland Club title, congratulations to Andy McEntee and all concerned. I particularly like that four promoinent hurlers played in the final and their club have consistent success in both codes. The Limerick lads in the club were celebrating Na Prarsaigh win and are hoping it bodes well for the year ahead, maybe it will.
Seniors good win at Raheny
AFL1 Raheny 1-11 St Sylvesters 2-12 Good win, really should have been more comprehensive but happy enough to get our first win over Raheny in three years. We started slowly going behind by three points before Palmer made a burst at the Raheny defence and Ross finished the move to the net. That picked us up and we maintained parity for a long while, Gary Sweeney in particular, Niall and Conor Meaney all contributing well. Mid second half and down to 14, Sweeney gave us a glimpse of his old self with a wonderful carry, beating four defenders and finishing a great goal. New boy Ed Walsh took over with a great display of point scoring, left and right, inside and outside, great to watch.
Football Champpionship Draws
Senior v UCD, interesting draw, they had a good run in the Sigerson, will they bring the same to the Dublin C'ship. Inters v Finbars, I don't know how they have been doing Junior A v Templeogue SS, sounds tough against their 2nd team , and Junior B team in the C Champiopnship v Portabello, again sounds tough
Disappointing start for Senior Footballers
AFL1 I St Sylvesters 0-13 St Vincents 4-13, We gave up two goals early on and Michael Shiels made a few great point blank saves to keep the score down. We did make chances at the other end but, while Gary and Michael were keeping the points ticking over they both missed real goal opportunities in the first half. After the break we gave up another couple of goals and again missed quite a few scorable opportunities.
Mixed results on a busy weekend
The Inter Hurlers had an impressive 11 point win over Na Fianna in the Corn Ceitean while the Inter Footballers lost by a single point to Fingallians in the Loving Cup. Junior hurlers ;lost by a couple of goals to Kevins in Corn Fág a Bealach, Junior As drew with Erins Isles in the Conlon Cup and the 4ths continued their good form from last season with a 2 point win over Pats Donabate in the Murphy Cup. Our Minor A Footballers were unlucky to lose by a point to Vincents in D2 League but our second minor team had a win over Whitehall.
Senior Footballers nice win at Portrane
St V de P Cup St Pats Donabate 1-10 St Sylvesters 4-13 First competitive game of the season and an impressive outring, scoring freely and only giving up scores late on. Mick Shields made a number of very good one-on-one saves, Dylan Connolly had an impressive busy debut at wing back, Gary Sweeney and Mick McCarthy were in form up front. We had some nice passing movements and overall had a good outing

Syls goalkeeping legend John Leonard wins Sports Book of the Year
Dub Sub Confidential named Setanta Sports Book of the year. Autobiography by former Dublin substitute goalkeeper John Leonard bags inaugural prize. John was a long time player on our Senior Football team, buy his book and make him a best seller, congratulations John.
Disappointing showing by U21 footballers
I think we lost by seven points to old rivals Kilmacud Crokes and it was probably our poorest display of this opposition. We started ok but quickly fell off the pace playing into a cold wind, looking cold and sluggish in ourselves against a fairly confident looking Crokes managed by Syls man Gabrial Bannigan. We trailed 1-10 to 0-02 at the break but made a better fist of the second half, Jack gaining some foothold in the middle, Luke Troy setting up a goal and scoring a second but we were always 5 yards off the pace and finished 2-11 to 2-04. There was a great crowd expecting a cracker and it'shard to explain the performance.
Jamie Caul - a bit of a GAA legend
Jamie lined out for Inishfails in Broomfield last Sunday in the AFL5 relegation playoff and, while our lads insist they held him scoreless he certainly gave an exhibition of full forward play and is in no way hampered by having only one hand. Jamie is the son of Sam Caul, another Balgriffen legend, was an acomplished Collegian soccer player in the US and is an inspiration to see him play, well done.
Juniors retain AFL5 status
AFL5 Relegation Playoff - St Sylvesters 1-08 Inishfails 0-06 After working so hard last year to gain promotion from AFL6 we were up against it all year but retained our AFL5 status after a fine win over local rivals Inishfails in a very entertaining game.. Make sure you look at the pictures, Andy had his hands full with a lively one armed man at full forward. Andy insists he was on top all through but Peter did'nt make it look that way (of course, Peter has connections in Balgriffen). Congratulations to Shane Cowley and Traolacj O'Donnell and their very young team (including the evergreen Keith Galvin).
Inters retain AFL3 status
AFL3 Relegation Playoff St Sylvesters 1-08 St Finnians Swords 0-07 Smashing win in a hard fought game keeps us in AFL3 and ensures we have our second team playoing at a very high lkevel next year. Congratulation to Ciaran and Derek Roche and all the panel, great achievement after a very mixed season.
Senior Footballers finish in style.
AFL1 St Sylvesters 1-13 St Judes 1-06 ?? Well, not really style as the weather was atrocious, but we finished the league with a very solid display, controlling the game from start to finish with some very encouraging displays, Beano was at his best at centre back, Gavin gave a great display alongside the ever excellent Ross, Conor Quinn again looked very tidy, Ronan and Collie Mc supported Beano well while Nockser was probably the pick of our front line.
Minor Football Manager 2016
The Adult Football Committee are now seeking expressions of interest in the position for the Minor A Football Manager for 2016. Relief as Senior Footballers retain Div1 status
AFL1 St Brigids 2-12 St Sylvesters 3-10 Although we led from start to finish, sometimes by 7 or 8 points, we were again happy to scrape over the line by the minimum margin and ensure we avoid the relegation lottery. We played some lovely deciisive football, especially in th efirst half where Jack opened with a goal and a point, Barry replaced Gary very early (I didn't see what happened), Michael, Dave Sexton, Nockser all hitting good points. Gavin and Ross were excellent in the middle while a new look defense had to cope with a very talented Brigids forward division.
Important win for Inter Footballers
AFL3 St Sylvesters 4-12 Ballymun Kickams 2-12 I just caught the last few minutes of the Inter game when Ballymun scored a goal and a point to take the lead and looked like we were in trouble but we re-grouped and finished with two good goals and a few points. I'm not sure what this means fo relegation playoffs as there are still a few games to play our for teams below us.
Seniors bad run continues
AFL1 St Sylvesters 0-10 Na Fianna 2-12 A very poor first half saw us 2-09 to 0-05 at the break. We picked it up in the second half and outscored Na Fianna but never really pushed up on them in a way that might threaten their lead. We need a win from the Brigids or Judes games and need to find a bit of confidence and a bit of form as we are a little down in our boots at the moment.
Level 3 referees
The club would like to congratulate the following who have now qualified as Level 3 referees, and we wish them well as they take on a new challenge; Karl Archbold, Niall Higgins, Eoin Mc Carthy. Well done lads, Aidan
Seniors out of the championship
SFC A St Pats Palmerstown 4-06 St Sylvesters 2-08 A bit of a shock this evening in Garristown as our senior footballers fell away badly against Div 2 Pats team. We struggled through the first half, I counted 6 wides, a few good Gary Sweeney points, Gary shaved the outside of the post, a missed penalty by Pats, a poor goal conceded saw us behind 1-04 to 0-05 at the break.
