Hurling

The Geography of Hurling (1:1)

Why is hurling currently popular in a compact region centred on east Munster and south Leinster, and in isolated pockets in the Glens of Antrim and in the Ards peninsula of County Down? The answer lies in an exploration of the interplay between culture, politics and environment over a long period of time.

Junior Hurlers lose to Boden in C'ship

JHC C: Ballyboden 1-14 to Syls 1-11. Probably fair to say that Boden were that little bit sharper than us and it told in the end. Only 5 down at HT playing against the wind, we felt we were still in with a very good chance. However a string of poor wides just after the restart made it an uphill battle throughout the 2nd half. A late goal added a bit of hope but time ran out. Overall though a very decent performance and still all to play for in this group considering the number of players due back from injury.

Kenny leads hurlers to win in Championship

SHC B Whitehall Colmclle 0-14 St Sylvesters 2-10 Two brilliant runs by Alan Kenny leading to goals by Dave Casey and Niall Coughlan gave us a great start to the Senior Hurling Championship. The second goal, a powerful finish by Nockser, came with a minute to go to give us a one point lead, quickly followed by a point by Andrew and we withstood a couple of Whitehall attacks to win by one. WE led 1-04 to 0-03 at the break after playing with a strong breeze in our backs,

Minor Hurlers up and running at last

Clan na Mara 1-13 Clontarf 1-11. Our amalgamated Minor hurling team (Syls\Scoil) collected its first league points ( Div2) on Sunday morning against a very capable Clontarf team managed by Noel Wardick (son of Syls stalwart Jim Wardick !) It was a battling performance based on a sturdy defence with Thomas, Sean Foley & Phelim excelling but ably supported by Darragh McGrath, Sean Doolin and Andrew. Danny Colclough returned to goal keeping duties from injury and made several crucial saves

Hurlers tough it out against Barrog

St Sylvesters 1-11 Naomh Barrog 2-6 By Cilian Murphy AHL3 St Sylvesters produced a thoroughly efficient second half performance to see off a dogged Naomh Barrog side in this AHL3 clash at Broomfield yesterday afternoon. With both sides unbeaten going into this game, there was plenty at stake with the intensity of both teams’ performances illustrating this clearly from the off.

Minor hurlers pipped by Barróg

MHL D2N Naomh Barrog 4-5 vs 0-14 Clan na Mara Disappointing result having started well, points from Eoin Mc, Simon, Shane and Rory going 4 points up into the wind but then we stopped dead in our tracks and let Barróg take over for 3-03 to 0-06 at the break. We were much more competitive in the second half, Sean Dolan, Scrappy, in particular and the two Killians driving us forward.

Hard fought Junior Hurling win

***Hard fought win in poor conditions** 2nd March 2014 AHL6 - Civil service 1-5 v Syls 1-6 Islandbridge The score line tells the story of how poor the conditions were but certainly not the effort put in by both teams. Early on, Service coped better and moved into a 1-4 to no score lead after 20 mins before Syls began to exert some influence, Conor Dwyers move to midfield tipping the balance in Syls favour, it yielded 2 frees which Pat Hoyne duly converted with his usual aplomb ! HT score 1-4 to 0-2.

Inter Hurlers open with a draw at Vincents

AHL3 St Vincents 2-09 St Sylvesters 0-15 For the second week in a row we drew at PNU. A fair result I would say after a very good game. Vincents opened strongly ad threatened to blow us away leading 1-04 to 0-01 a couple of Ormonde frees steadied us, Alan, Kevin and Killian got to grips with the middle and Andrew up front and we were were three down at the break.

Minor hurlers disappointing opener

MHL 2 Clan na Mara 0-07 Whitehall Colmcille 1-11 First outing for the amalgamated Syls Scoil outfit but Whitehall were too strong in the important departments, got the goal straight after the break and held us out for the remainder. Defensively we were solid, Barry Cushen made a few important saves while Sean at fullback and Andrew and Fhelim in the half line won their battles. We could have scored more and been closer in the end but Whitehall, who have always hurled in Div1 looked to have more class.

Junior Hurlers lose Top4 Final

AHL6 Top4 Final Skerries Harps 4-10 St Sylvesters 1-8 Probably a fair reflection, we were mostly outclassed by a better balanced Harps team We did put up a great showing in the second half, the highlight a goal on the run by Eoin Kennedy and a few well worked points by Eoin McCarthy, Colm O'Connor and Jonny Conway. Maybe Colm will send a report. Well done lads on a very competitive season, hurling into December ain't bad.

Minor hurlers lose in semis to Lucan

MHC B SF Lucan Sarsfields 4-06 St Sylvesters 2-05 Three goals against us in the first half all but finished our Championship run. Philip hit the post at one end and Lucan drove through for a goal at the other. Two of our backs collided and let them in for another. We got a grip around the middle but we struggled with the size of the field and hit five long range efforts wide. At 3-05 to 0-04 at the break but came out fighting in the second half but, unfortunately the scores failed to come against a tough Lucan rearguard and when their classy full forward goaled again on the break we were in deep trouble.

Dual Player - alive and well

Apparently the day of the dual player is over, even at club level or so we are to believe! But see attached, 8 Clare senior hurlers winning county football and getting to Munster Club Final! Surely if they can do it we should not let our kids be told that they must choose one code over the other........ Ernie

Minor Hurlers great win in extra time

MHC B QF St Sylvesters 3-17 St Brigids 3-16 Dare I say, our best win ever. Battled from behind a number of times against a strong talented Brigids to scrape home by the narrowest of margins. Although we led at half time 1-5 to 1-4 it is fair to say we were mostly chasing the game, a fine Colm Byrne goal and points from Conor, Simon, Collie and Philip bringing is back after a slow start.

Cracking All Ireland Final replay, congratulations to both teams on a classic game rounding off a great season for the GAA. Hurlers in Senior Championship Semi Final

SHC B SF Parnells 2-09 St Sylvesters 1-06 Our first foray into senior hurling came to an honourable end in Parnell Park last Saturday. In a team decimated by emigration and injuries we nonetheless stayed with a talented Parnells outfit and finished the game on the offensive looking for the goal to keep the dream alive.

Minors good win at Ballinteer

MHC B Ballinteer St Johns 3-07 St Sylvesters 2-11 A single point win in difficult windy conditions built on a good defensive display in the first half when we only conceded a single goal and trailed by a point at half time. With the wind favouring us in the second half we took the lead early with points form Shane and Colm Boran before a Colm Byrne goal gave us some daylight.

Hurlers reach Senior Championship SF

SHC B Nmh Olaf 2-09 St Sylvesters 2-14 Somewhat surprising easy victory over the top seeded team, we led from the 12th minute and won well to reach our first ever Senior Hurling Championship semi final. Martin Ormonde and Ciaran Falvey with two late goals gave us a cushion to withstand a disputed goal (through the top of the net we claimed anyway) against us and a late goal and a point by Olafs.
