Hurlers keep up impressive form

AHL3 Commercials 2-09 St Sylvesters 3-16 A win that keeps us in contention for automatic promotion to Senior league hurling, we led from start to finish and recovered from a wobble before half time to finish well in control. It looked like the game was over early when we led by 10 points but two goals against before the break rocked us having to face a strong wind in the second half.

Hurlers flying high

AHL3 St Sylvesters 2-15 St Peregrines 2-09 Big win for the hurlers over a previously unbeaten Peregrines in a good game in Broomfield. A feature of the team this year is the strength in depth we seem to have built up. I asked Lenny last night who he thought had played well and he said everyone and, for once, I agreed with him. Anthony Dunne again pulled off an incredible save, nice to hear the Peregrines guy congratulate him to which Anthony replied ' sure I didn't even see it', good reactions, bodes well.

Hurlers into C'ship QF

SHC B St Sylvesters 0-18 Round Towers C 0-18 Good lively game on a beautiful sunny evening in Broomfield, a draw was probably a fair result and enough to see Syls qualify for the quarter finals. Anthony Dunne was my man-of-the-match with a very solid game,, confident in collecting the ball, good on distribution and one save in particular that was top drawer. WE started very slow and were 6 to one down after 20 minutes. Kev O'Flynn dropped deep for a while and we clawed our way into the game at 0-08 to 0-06 at the break, Fionn and Martin Ormonde showing well up front.

St Sylvesters Advanced Hurling Camp 2014

We had a great week of hurling in Broomfield with 67 juvenile hurlers developing their skills over the week. The coaching was delivered at the highest standard by Ryan O'Dwyer, Dotsy O'Callaghan and our own Kevin O'Flynn (all intercounty players). They were ably assisted by Ronan, Collie, Mikey and Eamonn.

Hurlers win in Championship over Isles

SHC B St Sylvesters 0-14 Erins Isles 0-09 Tough match but a good win sees us retain our senior status (I believe we still need a result against Towers) for next year and edges us closer to a quarter final slot this year. Saturday 05th July. AHL 3 - Somerton Park 6:30pm - Castleknock v St Sylvesters.

Vice -Chairman to the rescue !

Junior C Championship: St Sylvesters 0-15, Kilmacud Crokes 0-9, Silverpark A lively start by Crokes coupled with a slow start by Syls gave Crokes 0-7 to 0-1 lead after 18 minutes. Jody had opened the scoring with a nice point after good work by Colly, dodging 3 players to setup the chance. However Crokes responded emphatically with their skillful numbers 13 & 14 striking some lovely points in a purple patch giving them a commanding lead. But up stepped Pat Hoyne . . .

Offaly GAA in freefall - the life of an Offaly player

A note republished from RTE - sent to me by Eugene Larkin - Stark but excellent response from an Offaly person to suggestions that the players no longer want it bad enough:-"To say the players don't want success enough is insane. Living with one I can say that at this stage they want nothing more. To win something, anything right now would ease the torment this year has been for them. They drive to work every morning and do their jobs, they come and spend most of their evening in a gym or on a field training.

Playing Rules of Hurling

Attached is an Interpretation of Rule in relation to the Playing Rules of Hurling, approved by Central Council that will come into effect on Saturday 14 June 2014. Having considered the current implementation of our rules in respect of the taking of penalty pucks and free pucks from the 20m line, Coiste Bainisti was concerned that it was endangering the safety of our players and that urgent action was necessary.

Fingal go close in Nicky Rackard Cup Final

Eight Syls lads involved in Croke Park yesterday as Fingal lost 1-17 to 1-16 to a good looking Tyrone team who led from start to finish but were happy to hear the final whistle as Fingal came with a late charge. Hillary Murray Hession, Alan Morris, Andrew Richardson and Cillian O'Flynn started while Graham Morris came on and Kevin McLoughney, Enda and Dara Flaherty were unused subs. Well done to all.

Two good wins in hurling leagues - Junior and Inter

AHL3 St Sylvesters 1-12 Na Fianna 0-09 Fine game of hurling and a great win for us (3 wins and a draw so far in the league) especially when we had so many lads playing in Letterkenny yesterday for Fingal. Nockser got a nic diving volleyed goal, Martin Ormonde deadly from frees, Tony Dunne and Graham Morris particularly impressive in defense.

Fingal reach Nicky Rackard Final

Fingal 2-11 Donegal 1-12 A 'gang' of Syls hurlers contributed to a surprising but well deserved Nicky Rackard semi-final win in Letterkenny yesterday. Interesting that Fingal were 7-1 in the bookies (red faces there - of course they weren't to know that Hillary was back in goals for Fingal). This is the All-Ireland C Final and, interesting that our participation was strongly opposed b y the Dublin County Board (but not by the clubs who voted overwhelmingly in favour). June 7th, before the Strictly Dancing - will be a great day for Syls.

Minor hurlers draw at Mearnóg

MHL 2N Naomh Mearnóg 1-11 Clan na Mara 1-11 Tough game which we led from start, just caught in the end when again some brave defending earned us the draw. We started very well and raced in to an eight point to two lead, Collie deadly from frees, Christian, Eoin Mc, Eoin K and a very lively Andrew all contributing. Mearnóg came into the game with some good scores and we led by two at the break

Junior Hurlers win over Parnells

JHC -C Syls 0-14, Parnells 2-6 Solid defending even in the absence of the injured Ciaran Murray and Ronan Kennedy confined Parnells to only 8 scores. Hilary very assured in goal as usual and delivered long puckouts despite the strong wind. Ian, Des and Peter stood strong especially in the 2nd half facing into the wind.

Draw in SHC v Finbarrs

SHC B St Sylvesters 2-09 Nmh Fionnbarra 1-12 Could have won, could have lost, draw probably a fair result. We completely mis-fired in the first half into a strong blustery wind, four different free takers missing. A great catch and carry by Fionn setup Alan Kenny for a goal (see the pictures) and we were only trailed by six, 1-06 to 1.00 at the break.

Syls trio in action for Fingal

Nicky Rackard Cup Rd1- Fingal v Louth Syls trio Andrew Richardson, Graham Morris, Alan Morris in action for Fingal last Saturday in Round 1 of Nick Rackard Cup. A match played in tricky slippery conditions but Fingal did enough to go through safely to the next round on 0-12 to 0-10 scoreline.

Eoin K does the biz for Minor Hurlers

MHL 2N Clann na Mara 2-10 Craobh Ciaran 2-09 We took the lead just on full time with a brilliant Colm Boran free from his own half into the wind but then we had to withstand almost 10 minutes of overtime before claiming a very hard fought win over a fast and determined Craobh. Eoin Kennedy scored two second half goals and a point coming off the bench, Colm had a good day from frees , Simon stood strong in the middle but the whole team deserve great credit for a very courageous win.

The Geography of Hurling (1:1)

Why is hurling currently popular in a compact region centred on east Munster and south Leinster, and in isolated pockets in the Glens of Antrim and in the Ards peninsula of County Down? The answer lies in an exploration of the interplay between culture, politics and environment over a long period of time.

Junior Hurlers lose to Boden in C'ship

JHC C: Ballyboden 1-14 to Syls 1-11. Probably fair to say that Boden were that little bit sharper than us and it told in the end. Only 5 down at HT playing against the wind, we felt we were still in with a very good chance. However a string of poor wides just after the restart made it an uphill battle throughout the 2nd half. A late goal added a bit of hope but time ran out. Overall though a very decent performance and still all to play for in this group considering the number of players due back from injury.

Kenny leads hurlers to win in Championship

SHC B Whitehall Colmclle 0-14 St Sylvesters 2-10 Two brilliant runs by Alan Kenny leading to goals by Dave Casey and Niall Coughlan gave us a great start to the Senior Hurling Championship. The second goal, a powerful finish by Nockser, came with a minute to go to give us a one point lead, quickly followed by a point by Andrew and we withstood a couple of Whitehall attacks to win by one. WE led 1-04 to 0-03 at the break after playing with a strong breeze in our backs,

Minor Hurlers up and running at last

Clan na Mara 1-13 Clontarf 1-11. Our amalgamated Minor hurling team (Syls\Scoil) collected its first league points ( Div2) on Sunday morning against a very capable Clontarf team managed by Noel Wardick (son of Syls stalwart Jim Wardick !) It was a battling performance based on a sturdy defence with Thomas, Sean Foley & Phelim excelling but ably supported by Darragh McGrath, Sean Doolin and Andrew. Danny Colclough returned to goal keeping duties from injury and made several crucial saves
