Minor 1999 - Football and hurling

Minors in Championship Final

MFC A SF St Vincents 1-04 St Sylvesters 1-08 Yet again a big second half display secured our first A Minor appearance in over ten years. We started very nervously and found it hard to get a rhythm. Vincents seemed to move the ball quicker and their forward line were more effective off minimal supply opening us up for a goal and a couple of points while at the other end it took one of the best strikes of the year by Dave Sexton to keep us in touch. A great touch over by keeper Eoin O'Byrne just at the break kept us alive for sure. 1-03 to 0-03 at the break. Tks to Grainne McKinney for the pictures.

Minors qualify for C'ship Semi

MFC A SF St Sylvesters 1-11 Castlenock 0-06 A convincing win in the end but we had to fight hard against a plucky Castlenock who really took the game to us in the first half and led 0-06 to 0-04 at the break thanks mostly to some fine point scoring by their 10 and 14. Scooby and Jack upped their game after the break however and with a cold wind in our back we pinned Castlenock down and slowly but surely picked off our points.

Minor hurlers lose to strong Plunketts ER

Minor Hurling B Championship St Sylvesters 0-8 Oliver Plunkets 2-10 We exited the championship on Sunday last against a very strong Plunket’s side. Down five points at half time we pulled it back to two ten minutes into the second half. We found it difficult to score and break down the Plunket’s defence, but we worked tirelessly to the end showing the true character this team has displayed over the years.

Minors top group with draw at Vincents

MFC Gr2 St Vincents 0-10 St Sylvesters 1-07 A late great point from a tight angle by Mark Hazely secured a draw and a home quarter final in a game we were always chasing. Collie Byrne fisted the goal late in the second half to bring us back into the game. Thanks to Grainne from Vincents for the pictures.

Minor Hurling Championship called off due to rain

The ref called the game against Erin Isles before the start as it was raining very heavy. Five or six of the lads had played in the U21 game yesterday and it would have been interesting to see how they performed.

Impressive minor win in C'ship

MFC Gr St Sylvesters 2-19 Templeogue Synge St 0-06 Big score in the end but this was a fine competitive game for 40 minutes before a goal gave us 1-10 to 0-06 lead and we never looked back. David Sexton put on a show of point scoring from all angles and was well assisted by Collie Byrne and an also deadly Mark Hazely.

Minor hurlers two in a row

MHC B Sylvesters 0-10 Naomh Barrog 1-6 This was a very tight, physical and feisty affair. Conor Dwyer was glad that his helmet offered the protection he needed. There was nothing easy on offer and scores were hard earned by both sides. We battled hard in every position and were deservedly in front by three points with five minutes left. Barrog burst through to score the only goal of the match and level the scores.

Minor footballers draw at Ballyboden.

After some great competition with Boden last year, our minors continued our rivalry with a hard fought draw. Minor Football A championship St Sylvesters 2-5 Ballyboden 1-8 Sylvester’s didn’t score for the first twenty minutes but they managed to level the scores by half time at 5 points each. The game could have gone either way in the second half with both teams showing great spirit and determination.

1992 Minor Reunion - Sat Sept 30th

1992 was a very successful year for Syls, winning the Minor A Football, runners-up in the Minor A Hurling (not a lot of people know that) and our Minor B footballers winning their championship. There is a reunion of all these lads next Saturday (after the Vincent de Paul Cup Final - make a day of it) . Derek Roche gave me a copy of the Minor Football program, attached. Anyone else got any memorabilia we could share.

Minor hurlers pipped at the post

MHL2 St Sylvesters 1-11 Erins Isle 1-12 Isles goaled with the last puck of the game well into injury time to win after we had fought our way into the lead with a goal about 10 minutes from time. It was a pity to see our county players umpiring instead of playing.

Malahide Primary Schools Senior Hurling Championship

Whether it was the opportunity to finish school early or the desire to represent their school in hurling, I am not sure but over 50 young hurlers turned up to play for their school in the inaugural ‘Malahide Primary Schools Senior Hurling Championship’ sponsored by The Grand Hotel. Panner sent PJP pictures, I think Ernie has some Ollies

Congratulations to St Oliver Plunketts NS on winning the Cumann na mBunscoil Senior Hurling Shield Final at Croke Park today, they defeated Scoil Mobhi of Glasnevin 2-8 to 1-5. Some smashing scores in U13 game

The St Sylvester’s U13A team kicked off their league campaign on a sunny Saturday afternoon in the castle where last years Div 1 North champions were up against the Div 1 South champions, Kilmacud Crokes. It’s rare that a match lives up to its expectations but this one certainly did not disappoint.

Minor As impressive over Vincents

Both Minor Football teams played Vincents in Broomfield this morning. The As really opened up in the second half after being held to a single point at the break. Defensively we were always on top with Conor Quinn solid at fullback, Stephen Cunningham and Jack Hazely commanding in midfield and Conor Mullarkey and Mark Hazely very lively up front. Yet again we have high expectations of our Minors.
