Juvenile Section looks back - looks forward

A very lively Juvenile AGM last night chaired by Ernie Brenner and ably abetted by Juv Sec Pat Hoyne looked back at very successful 2011 and forward to 2012. Pat and Ernie are staying on for 2012, Club Chairman Eddie Sullivan and Bar Manager Gary Penrose addressed the meeting and all representative positions were filled. Read Pat's report attached, it captures a very busy section and acknowledges all those that make it happen.

Minors 'pipped at the post' for the league title

MFL1 Final Ballyboden St Endas 3-05 St Sylvesters 2-07 What a shame for our fine Minor team, we led from the start and looked for most of the game like we would win our first Div1 title in a long while. We played with a mild but bitter wind in the first half, few nice points , flick by Meaney to Mark Hazely for a nice goal, solo effort from Fionn for a second and we led by 2-03 to 1-01 at the break.

Minor 4B league slips away in cold wind

MFL 4B Final St Sylvesters 2-7 Craobh Ciaran 2-12 Great season for our Minor B team, going through the league with 100% record but unfortunately just running out of steam late in the second half of this final at Broomfield. We led at half time by a few points but facing a cold wind and a very classy Ciaran's centre forward we failed to take our few chances and Ciarans finished strongly. Maybe Ger or Pat will send some details . . .think I saw John with the camera as well.

Minor Hurlers win C Championship in style

MHC C St Sylvesters 3-11 Raheny 1-13 Although 3-11 sounds like a good score the reality was that this win was built on a couple of early goals and some superb defending in the second half into the wind. See Eddie's report and thanks to Eddie, Colm, Martin, Declan and Declan and all the players for a few very enjoyable games, it was great stuff lads, well done. Great support on the line surely helped the lads along as well.

Scoil Iosa win Dublin Colleges Senior Hurling B Title

Scoil Iosa 3-12 Confey 2-02 Fine colleges win for Scoil Iosa fielding mostly Syls Minor and U16 teams from last Sunday, Mark Hazely and Paul McBride two additions (and a lad from Vincents). Sean Kane laid down the gauntlet early with another of his trademark bustling runs yielding a great goal and Kevin O'Flynn catching all round him and deadly from frees. Confey had a few excellent hurlers but we had much greater strength in depth, and, while never totally dominant, always looking the likely winners.

Minor hurlers win in a thriller

MHC C St Sylvesters 2-19 Kilmacud Crokes 3-11 AET When Colm Byrne picked out Sean Kane who goaled for Syls to lead for the first time with minutes remaining it looked good for our lads. We repelled Crokes attack twice but then they goaled off a broken ball in our square and, well, it didn't look quite so good. We didn't despair, Brendán put the ball in deep, Byrne won a 21 yard free and Flynn equalised to take us to extra time. Great stuff.

Minor As win well over Raheny

MFL1 Syls 2-6 Raheny 1-04 - Super 5 point win over a very strong Raheny which puts us top of MFL1 and may be enough to win us the league or at least a playoff with Boden. It was a very impressive, if sometimes frustrating, display by our lads, dominating the play for most of the game but slow to make it show on the scoreboard. Both teams played extra men in the backline so it was difficult enough to see what was really happening.

Minor Bs lose narrowly in C'ship semi

MFC E St Sylvesters lost to Ballyboden St Endas in an exciting championship semi final that went right down to the wire. Some confusion at the end when we had a close in free but seemingly believed we were two points down and went for a goal which was defended by the Boden lads. Turned out we were only a point down. Bad luck that.

Cracking win for Minor Hurlers

MHC C St Sylvesters 0-13 St Oliver Plunkets ER 0-7 Great win for the lads against a strong OPER outfit. We led from start to finish but the Navan Road lads never gave us an inch and we had to battle to the end. This should see us into the semi final and, on this form, we are surely planning to give it a good go. Thanks to John Keogh and Bernard for the pictures

Minors go out by one point on score difference

Despite winning by a whopping 22 points over St Judes the Minor A team bowed out of the Championship, finishing one point behind Ballyboden on score difference (and even that seemed uncertain). This was a terrible shame as we looked like we could seriously challenge for honours playing a very open skillful game. I understand we protested the championship format without success earlier in the year but the idea of only one team qualifying from a group on score difference or on highest score goes completely against our ethos and makes a mockery of the efforts of players and management.

Minor Hurlers battle out a draw

MHC B St Sylvesters 3-11 O' Tooles 4 - 8 It was a tough contest from start to end and O'Tooles were not going to give up easly, especially on their own home ground. O'Tooles settled more quickely than we did and were 1-3 to 2 points after ten minutes. For the next twenty minutes we dominated and with goals from Dereck Morris and Kevin McLoughney we led by 2-6 to 1-4 at half time. We opened the second half well by extending our lead to eight points with a goal from Colm Byrne

Minor Footballers open their Championship with a draw.

MFC A St Sylvesters 0-09 Ballyboden St Endas 0-09 Enjoyable game to watch, we led, we trailed, we led and ended up drawing. We went into a 2 point lead before Boden took over against a blustery wind and scored some really classy points. We struggled to use the wind and a missed free leaving us down a point at the break looked ominous.

A Div4C game against table toppers St Maurs at The Castle which we lost by 3-2 to 4-15 and a Div 4B game at the same venue on Tuesday against Castlenock which we won. There was some excellent football and some really impressive point scoring. Thursday our table topping Div1 team take on Balinteer over at Marley Grangem, worth the trip if you can make it.

Oliver Plunkets in Fingal Schools Final

St Oliver Plunkett National School Senior Boys took on a strong St Mary's of Ashbourne in the Fingal Schools League Premier Division final in Parnell Park on Tuesday . There is nothing quite like the schools finals in Parnell Park in May and the 400 odd screaming Malahide kids been shepherded by some stressed teachers and a bunch of nervous parents all decked out in the school colours ensured the excitement and noise level was like an All Ireland Final. The bus loads of travelling supporters left the school early with high hopes that this was going to be their year as they have fallen at the final hurdle a few times before in recent years but unfortunately Malahide lost out again in a close encounter.
