Minor Hurlers up and running at last

Clan na Mara 1-13 Clontarf 1-11. Our amalgamated Minor hurling team (Syls\Scoil) collected its first league points ( Div2) on Sunday morning against a very capable Clontarf team managed by Noel Wardick (son of Syls stalwart Jim Wardick !) It was a battling performance based on a sturdy defence with Thomas, Sean Foley & Phelim excelling but ably supported by Darragh McGrath, Sean Doolin and Andrew. Danny Colclough returned to goal keeping duties from injury and made several crucial saves

Minor hurlers pipped by Barróg

MHL D2N Naomh Barrog 4-5 vs 0-14 Clan na Mara Disappointing result having started well, points from Eoin Mc, Simon, Shane and Rory going 4 points up into the wind but then we stopped dead in our tracks and let Barróg take over for 3-03 to 0-06 at the break. We were much more competitive in the second half, Sean Dolan, Scrappy, in particular and the two Killians driving us forward.

Minor hurlers lose in semis to Lucan

MHC B SF Lucan Sarsfields 4-06 St Sylvesters 2-05 Three goals against us in the first half all but finished our Championship run. Philip hit the post at one end and Lucan drove through for a goal at the other. Two of our backs collided and let them in for another. We got a grip around the middle but we struggled with the size of the field and hit five long range efforts wide. At 3-05 to 0-04 at the break but came out fighting in the second half but, unfortunately the scores failed to come against a tough Lucan rearguard and when their classy full forward goaled again on the break we were in deep trouble.

Minor Hurlers great win in extra time

MHC B QF St Sylvesters 3-17 St Brigids 3-16 Dare I say, our best win ever. Battled from behind a number of times against a strong talented Brigids to scrape home by the narrowest of margins. Although we led at half time 1-5 to 1-4 it is fair to say we were mostly chasing the game, a fine Colm Byrne goal and points from Conor, Simon, Collie and Philip bringing is back after a slow start.

Minor hurlers disappointing opener

MHL 2 Clan na Mara 0-07 Whitehall Colmcille 1-11 First outing for the amalgamated Syls Scoil outfit but Whitehall were too strong in the important departments, got the goal straight after the break and held us out for the remainder. Defensively we were solid, Barry Cushen made a few important saves while Sean at fullback and Andrew and Fhelim in the half line won their battles. We could have scored more and been closer in the end but Whitehall, who have always hurled in Div1 looked to have more class.

Eoin K does the biz for Minor Hurlers

MHL 2N Clann na Mara 2-10 Craobh Ciaran 2-09 We took the lead just on full time with a brilliant Colm Boran free from his own half into the wind but then we had to withstand almost 10 minutes of overtime before claiming a very hard fought win over a fast and determined Craobh. Eoin Kennedy scored two second half goals and a point coming off the bench, Colm had a good day from frees , Simon stood strong in the middle but the whole team deserve great credit for a very courageous win.

Congratulations to Ciaran who captained Belvedere College in the Leinster Senior Rugby Cup on Sunday v Clongowes. Despite a fine try by Ciaran Belvo lost but well done all the same, it is a great honour in the world of rugby for Ciaran and his mam and dad. Ciaran played with us up to U14, Ray managed for about seven years and Sean plays U13 with Syls.

U15As win the Championship

U15A Championship Final St Sylvesters 3-09 Lucan Sarsfields 1-06 Congratulations to the U15s and to Brian Barnes, Paul Reinhardt, Declan Lynch bringing the first A Championship to Malahide in over ten years. We led from start to finish, and never really looked in danger even though Lucan had some fine footballers on display. Defensively we were tenacious when needed and kept Lucan out when they came at us early in the second half, we were always dominant in the middle and up front we played some magnificent fluid football. Eamon Dulligan sent a nice report, Peter sent a few pictures and there is a great report from the Evening Herald with pictures by Caroline Quinn, maith sibh go léir.

U15 Footballers reach C'ship final

U15 Championship Semi-Final Naomh Mearnog 1-7 St. Sylvesters 1-14 A seven point win in the end seemed a little flattering as we had trailed for much of the game but we took over completely in the last quarter and a brilliant solo goal by Cian McLoughlin when we led by two closed out the game. There was a huge crowd cheering on Sylvesters on a beautiful morning at Naomh Marnóg. See the report from Eamonn Dullaghan.

U14s win over Crokes to go top

U14Div1 St Sylvesters 5-09 Kilmacud Crokes 4-09 On Saturday afternoon in the Castle, Sylvester’s U14’s met their old foes Kilmacud Crokes in the last round of league fixtures knowing a win would ensure they finished joint top of Div 1 and also eliminate Kilmacud from the playoffs. The team has been progressing well in the second half of the season having beaten table toppers Na Fianna twice in recent weeks playing an exciting brand of attacking football and Saturday was no different.

Slow start for U16s

After their U15 Championship and Shield heroics, the U16s had a slow start on Sarurday, both losing their league openers. I was over at Ballymun to see the As failed to take advantage of a bitter cold strong wind after the break and the home side maintained their six point lead.

Minors go out yet again on score difference

MFC A Na Fianna 3-13 St Sylvesters 3-13 For the third time in four years we were eliminated from the Minor A Championship on score difference after being held to a draw at Mobhi Road. A unsatisfactory result from our perspective and a poor return for the effort by the lads and their mentors. It was a really great game with some top class play from both sides and good luck to Na Fianna in the quarter finals.

Minor Hurlers - We'll leave it there so!

Bernard and Mel completed a 12 year stint coaching from Nursery to Minor last Sunday and wish the best to all the boys who played for us over the years and gave us so much enjoyment. Thanks also to the families and club members who supported us so well over that time, we shared some great days and we hope to see the lads hurling away for years to come. Attached is our collage of team photos. Syls Abú.

MHC B Gr4 Clan na Mara 1-12 Fingallians 0-09 A win was not enough to get through the group stages as Thos Davis beat Maurs and they both finished above us. We were happy with our win over a very skilful Fins outfit and a good open game but we never really threatened to run up a big score needed if Davis lost. Thanks to Scoil Ui Conail's Seamus Fennessy and Tommy Naughton for joining up with us this year to compete in minor hurling. We were competitive in all games and were happy with our hurling.

Minor Hurlers happy to draw, could have won

MHC B Clan na Mara 1-13 Thomas Davis 2-10 For the first half of the game Thomas Davis had the upper hand and controlled nearly every aspect of the game, which saw us coming in at half time with a 7 point defecit. Clan na Mara came out at in the second half playing like a different team, where we started getting to the Sloitar first and really pushing forward and chipping away at that lead.

Minor Hurlers good display not enough at Maurs

MFC B St Maurs 2-16 Clann na Mara 1-12 Our best display of the year in the first half was not enough to give us the win out in Rush as Maurs finished stronger in the last quarter. This leaves us needing a win at Fingallians and other favourable results if we are to progress. Thanks to Mike Rose Nell for the pictures.

Minor hurlers draw at Mearnóg

MHL 2N Naomh Mearnóg 1-11 Clan na Mara 1-11 Tough game which we led from start, just caught in the end when again some brave defending earned us the draw. We started very well and raced in to an eight point to two lead, Collie deadly from frees, Christian, Eoin Mc, Eoin K and a very lively Andrew all contributing. Mearnóg came into the game with some good scores and we led by two at the break

Minor Footballers draw at the death

MFC B GrB A last minute pointed 45 by Dylan Connolly secured a deserved draw in a lively championship group game against Lucan Sarsfields in Broomfield. It was a helter skelter finish to a pretty good game. We trailed by three going into the last 10 minutes, Simon pointed, Dylan pointed, Lee Duffy missed a sitter, Luke Troy hit the crossbar then Duffy goaled, only for Lucan to respond with an immediate goal leaving it to Connolly to tie it up with almost the last play.

A well earned award for team captain Dan after a fine display in the final and doubly earned after an even more impressive effort in the semi against Marnóg. Dan also picked up a hurling medal with the U16s in the Shield a few weeks back and is a player we will surely see in the sky blue in years to come.
