Minor 1999 - Football and hurling

Minors good win at Ballinteer

MHC B Ballinteer St Johns 3-07 St Sylvesters 2-11 A single point win in difficult windy conditions built on a good defensive display in the first half when we only conceded a single goal and trailed by a point at half time. With the wind favouring us in the second half we took the lead early with points form Shane and Colm Boran before a Colm Byrne goal gave us some daylight.

Minor footballers win in the Championship

MFC A St Sylvesters 2-11 Lucan Sarsfields 3-04 Mostly impressive display, we gave up two late goals giving us a little scare, to start our four team group in the championship. Two first half goals by Dylan Connolly set us up after we had been quite wasteful and we led by four at the break.

Ryan hat trick gets Minors over Lucan

MHL2 St Sylvesters 4-08 Lucan Sarsfields 1-09 A second half hat trick of goals for Paul gave us a surprising win over a Lucan team we never beaten to continue our recent good run. The win was built on a super defensive effort in the first half when Lucan looked like they would overwhelm us but we kept the goals out and were happy to trail by only four, 1-05 to 0-04 at the break.

Minor hurlers win at Clontarf

MHL2 Clontarf 1-09 St Sylvesters 3-10 We haven't beaten Clontarf very often over the past 8 years so it was nice to finally get one over them and continue our 'almost' excellent run of 4 wins from the last 5. Apart from a late goal our defense was excellent, Karl Stacey sweeping up all round him, Matt and Cian very tight, Danny didn't put a foot wrong and the half line of Thomas, Alan and Andrew holding a very fast opposition.

Minor hurlers draw with Judes

MHL2 St Sylvesters 2-13 St Judes 2-13 After two great wins at Crokes and Scoil we were annihilated by Setanta so it was really interesting to see which Syls team showed up against unbeaten Judes. Thankfully it was the determined skilful variety as we gave our best display this year against some very strong opposition. It was great to have Alan Kavanagh and Jack back hurling and they grew in stature as the game progressed but all sixteen players contributed greatly.

Minor hurlers good win over Scoil

MHL 2 St Sylvesters 8-10 Scoil Ui Conaill 2-08 A surprisingly easy win for the minors, second in a row, over a Scoil team that usually put it up to us. In fairness, the general play was fairly even but we kept the goals out when it mattered and benefited from a few misjudgments into the sun to give us goals that effectively killed off the game. Colm Byrne was again in top form and supported by Shane, Simon, Eoin Mc and Jamie firing over some very sweet points, while Colm Boran, Paul Ryan, Eoin Cooney and Mikey contributed goals.

Paul McBride golfing for Ireland

Best of luck to Paul Mc Bride who was selected for the Ireland U. 18 golf team to compete in the Home Internationals. The event will take place in Baltray G.C and their first game will see them take on England on Tuesday 7th August, with further games against Scotland and Wales. Paul is also joined on the team by fellow Scoil Iosa student and golfing talent Gavin Moynihan. Best of luck lads and if the golf doesn’t work out there’s always a place on the Football and Hurling team.

Feile Football report - belated

U14's topple Feile Champions Ballyboden

Congratulations to Ballyboden St Endas winning both Football and Hurling Feiles - a magnificent achievement. Syls under 14s got back to winning ways on Thursday evening against feile champions ballyboden st endas, with a lot of injuries and the first year exams up and running we were down to the bare bones numbers wise, we had 16 players on the night but every one of them played their heart out.

Colm Byrne wins it for Minor Hurlers

MHL 2 Kilmacud Crokes 3-15 St Sylvesters 4-14 A rousing win having been six behind with 10 minutes remaining, Colm Byrne simply decided to change things as he drove through for two excellent goals. Conor Dwyer added the winning points while Killian Power and Thomas won the balls that mattered in defense to give us a most satisfying win. It was a good game for us from the start as Crokes had some fine hurlers, as usual, but we stayed with them throughout and it was only in the last quarter that they seemed to have us beat before Colm intervened.

Minor As lose at Na Fianna

MFL1 Na Fianna 1-17 St Sylvesters 0-08 The score doesn't tell the story well from our perspective. We have suffered many big defeats to this All Ireland winning Na Fianna side over the years and with Simon sidelined through injury and losing Jack two minutes into the game, things looked bad. We gave up a goal and a few points but I must say the lads rallied well and played some of their best football in a long while.

Minor Bs win at Cuala

MFL4 Fair play to Shay and Padraig and the boys, they kept their cool after a few heavy defeats and re-grouped for a fine late win away to Cuala. Great to see Danny, Thomas and Josh back in the team. Sean Foley put in an impressive second half in the middle, well supported by James McKenna Byrne and Sean Quinn.

Minor hurlers let it slip

MHL2 St Maurs 3-11 St Sylvesters 3-07 Tough uncompromising game, we went behind early but fought really hard to get ahead by three at half time, goals by Simon and Eoin K, points by Shane, Colm Byrne and Eoin Mc and some terrific defending by Barry, Killian Power and two super saves by Danny. We stayed in front up to about 5 minutes remaining thanks to a well taken Colm Byrne goal but a combination of missed scores into a difficult wind and a Maur's goal saw us edged out.

Viva le Hurling . . .French student visit

A group of 38 students and their teachers from the Angers region of France dropped by to watch and participate in a Minor/U15 hurling session. The weather was not too kind but, fair play to Sandrine Lagarde and her crew, they were good sports and got the most from their visit. Thanks to the U15 lads for making up the numbers and to Bernard, Ronan and the lads . . . Viva le hurling!!

Minors lose to Clontarf

MFL1 St Sylvesters 1-04 Clontarf 2-10 Playing against the wind we trailed eight points to one at the break but goaled on the restart and, with the wind in our backs had a chance to recover. It didn't happen however, competing well in general play but too often taking the wrong options we fell to what looked like a heavy defeat in the end.

Minor As lose at Cuala

MFL1 Today saw Syls Minor A's travel to Cuala to be defeated 0-10 to 1-4 in the Minor Football League division 1. Syls started slowly and could not really get out of the blocks in the first half. We arrived at half time 0-5 to 0-2 down.

Colclough save seals it for Minor Hurlers

MHL2 Ballinteer St Johns 0-09 St Sylvesters 0-13 Leading by a single point with a minute or two remaining, Johns had scored the last two points and a rasper to the top corner was brilliantly saved by Danny Colclough to keep us alive. We lifted the siege and a well taken point by Conor Dwyer and a long free from Colm Byrne gave us our first and probably deserved win of the season.

Minor footballers start with a win

MFL1 St Sylvesters 0-09 Kilmacud Crokes 1-05 Great scene in Broomfield this morning saw our new Minors take on Crokes in the league just three weeks after losing the championship final to the same opposition. The pitch looked and played well after al the rain and congratulations to Mick and his team. With nine second year minors and six more who featured in the championship run we had a fairly experienced team on the field.

Minors brave effort unrewarded in Championship Final

MFC A Kilmacud Crokes 0-10 St Sylvesters 0-08 We finished looking for the goal to tie but punched over for a point as the ref blew full time. We never gave up but, in truth, we were very late shaking off the nerves and playing with the power that might bring the coveted title. Crokes were quick out of the blocks and, but for some excellent defense they might have been out of sight rather than two apiece after the first quarter.

Crokes qualify to meet Syls in Minor C'ship Final

There was a good Syls crew down at Bray Emmet's fabulous facility to see Crokes overcome Na Fianna by a single point in the other semi-final. Although they led from start to finish, mostly by three or more points, Crokes never put the game away and a late Na Fianna goal had us expecting (and probably fearing due to the bitter cold) a draw and extra time. Crokes excellent defense, however, had other ideas, and along with a more economical forward division probably deserved the win. We will have out work cut out but no doubt we will be well up for it, John, Panner, Paul and Super certainly have the lads preparing hard. LETS GET THE WORD OUT AND HAVE A HUGE SYLS SUPPORT AT THE FINAL
