U12 Girls stun Westmanstown Gaels with a super display of football

St Sylvesters v Westmanstown Gaels 30 Apr 2016. On Saturday, St Sylvesters U12 girls travelled to Westmanstown Gaels. After the defeat to Westmanstown Gaels in March the team did not want a repeat performance. Syls won the toss and elected to play with the wind and slope. From the start, Syls midfield and defence were dominant and did not give the Westmanstown Gaels girls room to play. Syls forwards gave a display in how to take scores.

The movement of the ball between defence and attack was second to none, and Syls forwards converted most of their opportunities. The doggedness of the Syls midfield and defence stemmed the flow of ball to Westmanstown Gaels excellent forwards, who scored when the odd occasion arose.

The second half was equally good, though scores were difficult to achieve. Against the slope and the wind, the Syls defence gave a performance that limited the Westmanstown attack to long range scores. The pressure was so intense that half Westmanstown Gaels scores came from frees. The majority of Syls scores came from play. The Syls girls put in a great performance and deserved the victory.

A special thank you to S. Hoyne and M. Roche who joined us from the U11 panel. The two girls put in a brilliant performance in midfield and defence. The goalkeeping role was shared among those that played in midfield.

The team was: A. McCabe, C. McMahon, M. Ring, M. Roche, S. Hoyne, T. O’Keeffe, K. Brophie, E. Brady, A. Brenner, L. Murphy.

A great thank you to the supporters on the day who went home with smiles on their faces. Thank you to P. Mullenny, J. McMahon and K. Murphy who directed operations from the sideline.

The U12 girls next match is v Trinity Gaels on 14 May 2016 @ 17:00 in Trinity Geals grounds in Druminigh.
