SYLS MEN RELISH THE CHALLENGE OF SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Following an undefeated run so far in the league, the St Sylvester’s senior men have performed solidly in Division Two and with a renewed fervour as they settle into the new management style. Now, as the team prepare to launch its Senior Championship campaign, Clarke knows that there is a step-change, saying, ‘The league games have gone as well as they could have. Free of the intensity of Division 1, the men have dared to play more creatively and express themselves more to try new ideas on the pitch.
This new approach has basis in the manager’s focus on a ‘culture of sustainability’. The strength of the team is now complimented by new blood that Clarke has introduced, recognising the talent in younger players. ‘We’re working well on a longer-term outlook which aims to nurture new seeds of talent and plans to build success for the years to come at St Sylvester’s.’
The Senior Championship brings a new level of challenge. There is much anticipation around Group 1 which many have described as particularly ‘tasty’. ‘Na Fianna, Kilmacud Crokes & Ballymun Kickhams are all strong teams but our strategy and playing focus remains. We’ve got a year-long view. If we do our business well off the field, we’ll get the results on it. Win, lose or draw the lads will hold their heads high. We hope the followers will get a sense of what we are trying to achieve.’ concludes Clarke.
