Junior Hurling Championship win vs Scoil Ui Chonaill

Junior Bs Championship RD1: St Sylvesters 2-8 Scoil Ui Chonaill 0-9 ( 7th May 2017- Broomfield) Very good result against a well drilled and organised Scoil Team. A nice blend of experience and youth paid dividends in this tightly contest match. The experience (aka the ould lads..! ) provided by Hillary, Ciaran Murray, Colm O’Connor and Ian McCafferty. The youth supplied by minor players Barry Crosse and Daniel Mannix, both played excellently. Scores provided by Colm O’Connor (2-4), Ian McCafferty (0-1), Denis Coffey(0-1), Eoran O’Reilly(0-1), Deccy Markey (0-1) Next Champ Match: Thursday 8th June vs Wild Geese, 19:30 Oldtown

Hurlers go down to Raheny

Hurlers go down to Raheny

SHC B St Sylvesters 1-09 Raheny 0-16 A late goal took a little edge off the score but we were this far off Raheny in Broomfield in front of a decent crowd last evening. We started well and matched Raheny point for point but they were getting well on top from the possession perspective and always looked more comfortable to a disappointing Syls. We really need to up our point scoringand making space outfield as we seem to always be battling in heavy traffic and consequently under pressure.

Hurlers let it slip after good comeback

Hurlers let it slip after good comeback

AHL3 Scoil Uí Chonaill 1-11 St Sylvesters 1-08 A poor first half put us a hole losing 1-07 to 0-03 at the break. In fact, all Scoil's scores came in the first 20 minutes, we held them tight for the remainder of the half but poor shooting and decision making did't convert our supremacy into scores. We continued to dominate after the break and slowly pegged them back with points from Sean Graham, Martin, and a nice goa; by Colm Byrne. We got back to level 1-07 a piece but Scoil finished out stronger with a few good points while we missed the couple of chances we made.

Jim, the hurley fixer

Jim, the hurley fixer

It's a great tradition among hurlers that some guys fix broken hurleys. Two repaired examples showed up at our house this morning and I have to say they are a brilliant examples of an age old tradition. These are from Jim Wardick who has been fixing hurleys for Syls lads for over thirty years. Other lads like Bernard, Greg, Danny also practice this art, I even used to have a go myself years ago and maybe will again sometime. A great tradition Jim, many thanks from all the lads whose favourite piece of ash you saved.

St Stephen's Day Hurling - 10 years of memories

Another great turnout last Monday for the annual St Stephens Day hurling. We had a minutes silence and rousing round of applause for Declan, Leonard spared the whistle, Davy Keogh said Hello, Liam Foley led his crew, Tom Hughes gave Luke a hand, Ian's McCafferty's lad stole the show sending Hillary the wrong way, Shay Early's lad and Niall McCarthy also showed promise, another good day out. I almost have 10 years of pictures, mostly not great, I'm sure Danny O'Connor has lots more.

Eoin Mc hat trick seals final spot for U21 hurlers

U21HC C SemiFinal St Sylvesters 3-10 St Kevins 1-08 Good win last evening against a tough St Kevins at Alfie Byrne Rd. Eoin McCarthy gets the headline for three superb goals but is was a good all round display. Defensively we had to withstand a serious fightback from Kevins and we kept the goals out when it really mattered. Th efinal is this Saturday v St Maurs at the same venue, Alfie Byrne Park Clontarf 14.00 - see you there. A few artistic pictures from Peter attached.

21 hurlers win at Crokes

U21 HC C Kilmacud Crokes B 1-09 St Sylvesters 0-22 Good win, led from start to finish and generally looked the better side against an always handy Crokes. Early points from Eoin McCarthy, Eoin Kennedy and my man of the match, Jamie Kennedy was followed by a pretty wasteful period where we relied of Dan Murphy's free taking to keep the scoreboard ticking. A Crokes goal pegged us back for a little while but tightened up defensively, Thomas Colclough finding his form in the second half, Mikey, Eamon, Philip, Barry continuing where they left off at Minor and, while never completely comfortable, we maintained control for the second half.

U21 Football and Hurling

Syls U21 Football will be managed this year by Paul Hussey with assistance from Seamus Early, Cathal O'Donnell and Kenny Lawlor. First game in the U21 B Championship is this coming Saturday 19th against Ballinteer I believe - will post details when I can find them. The U21 Hurlers are managed by Leonard O'Carroll with assistance from Jimmy Deneher, Anthony Cooney,Bernard Boran and Liam Foley. They had a walkover awarded by Round Towers C last Saturday in the U21C quarter final (I think Towers had a clash with Inter Hurling). U21 is always a great competition, watch out fofr details and get out and support Syls.

MHC D Final Ballyboden St Endas 3-08 St Sylvesters 1-11 A late Ballyboden goal gave them the win in a very entertaining game. Syls settled after a slow sart and were tied 1-06 each at the break. We dominated the second half but poor shooting and a great display from the Boden keeper yielded just five points. Two late goas pegged us back and gave them the win. Lovely morning at Trinity Gaels and a great Syls crowd. Congratulations on a great season..

AHL3 Erins Isles 0-13 St Sylvesters 4-08 Much improved display from the hurlers this afternoon against a handy enough looking Isles. A smashing early goal from a first time effort by Danny of a great setup by Andrew set the tone. Andrew and Danny were brilliant all through, Collie Byrne ain good form winning lots of high ball as was Simon while Eoin K and Diarmiud also contributed to the scoreboard. Kev Clarke had a great game at the back as had Graham at fullback and Derek in the goals.

Great turnout for Dave McGrath Memorial

Great turnout for Dave McGrath Memorial

Ref Danny Harrington called a dubious draw in a lively junior hurling game to remember former Syls star Dave McGrath who died suddenly in 2012. There was a great crowd at Malahide Castle and thanks to Lusk Round Towers who provided the opposition. Danny O'Connor will tell the full story, well done to all, a nice turnout of lads who played with Dave. Nice note attached from the McGrath family and a few pictures from Bernard.

Minor B Hurlers advance to the Championship Semi Final

MHC D Group 2 Ballyboden 2-14 St Sylvesters 2-4 The Minor B hurlers faced a strong looking Ballyboden side out in Ballycullen in the D Championship on Sunday morning. It was a very tight and close fought encounter for most of the match but we ran out of steam against the wind in the last quarter and got blitzed by 2 late goals and a few points. Despite this we still qualified out of the group on points difference and so get to do it all over again, this time at home v Ballyboden in the Semi Final on Oct 16th.
