Inters lose but two junior sides won

Inters lose but two junior sides won

Fingallians beat us well in the Inter game where we are having a tough time competing with first teams, especially with having to always play at the same time as our own the first team. The Junior A team had a good win away to An Garda while the 4th team continued on their unbeaten streak with a win over neighbough Trinity Gaels.

Syls Seniors Football continue good run in AFL1

AFL 1 St Sylvester’s 3-15 Clontarf 0-05 Our men’s senior team kept up their recent good run of results going with a comprehensive win of over division 1 newcomers Clontarf in Broomfield last night. The visitors started brightly with two quick points but once out lads got into their stride it was all one way traffic. We got two goals either side if half time through Alan Foy and Gary Sweeney that put a real gap between the teams that Clontarf were never able to come close to closing.

The Inters footballers secured our Intermediate Championship status with a 1.15 to 9 win against Craobh Chiaran in Broomfield on Saturday. We now await the draw for the Inter b championship ¼ final. One our bravest competitors Paidi White shipped a big hit and was taken to VHI Clinic for treatment. We wish Paidi a speedy recovery and return to adult football.

Good draw at Ballymun for Seniors

VdeP CUP St. Sylvester’s 0-12 Ballymun Kickhams 1-09 Both clubs fielded close to first string teams for this cup game in Broomfield last Thursday in preparation for their SFC games this weekend and it proved to be a top quality game. Syls led by 2 points near the end of the first half before a Dean Rock goal sent the visitors in a point a head at half time. We were also 5pts ahead during the second half before Ballymun came back at us. A Dean Rock free right on 30mins seems to have snatched the win until Syls broke up the field and a lovely long range point from Shane Doyle meant that the game ended in a draw. The point earned from this game means that Syls cannot be caught at the top of group two and have qualified for the final for this competition where we will come up against Kilmacud Crokes. The date for that game has yet to be confirmed by CCC.

Good win for Inters in Loving Cup

Loving Cup: St. Sylvesters 8-16 Ballyboughal 2-3 Great to see the Inters bounce back in such an emphatic manner after a very disheartening early exit in the Intermediate Championship the previous week. This was a timely reminder of what this (mostly!) young outfit is capable of, and should hopefully provide a boost to the lads so they can kick on after a tough run of recent games.

I see Shane is selected at full forward for New York in their upcoming Connacht Championship v Sligo. Good luck Shane looking to cause a major upset and New York have been threatening. Please send me a note to share if you spot any other Syls players causing a stir in other leagues and inter-county and I will share with our community.

Two wins, two losses in Football Championships

Two wins, two losses in Football Championships

The Seniors gave a very impressive first half display against St Annes to progress to round 2 in the Championship. Goals from Jack Hazely and the lively Dylan Connolly gave is a 2-06 to 0-01 lead at the break and we had plenty more chances. We finished 3-14 to 0-06 and I'm sure the lads were happy with the performance. Gary partnering Ross in the middle was an interesting selection and with long balls to Jack at full forward always an option we looked pretty good all round. Lucan in the next round, a good test of Jack Sheedy's killer instincts. The Inters were very disappointed to lose to Thos Davis on Friday. just not converting possession to scores and a pity this young team not getting a chance to go further.

Mixed display in Snr Football loss to Vincents

Mixed display in Snr Football loss to Vincents

AFL1 st Vincents 1-20 St Sylvesters 0-10 Hard game to comment on. The first half had everything that's good in Gaelic Football, played at a fierce pace and we counted ourselves very unlucky to be 0-11 to 0-06 down at the break. Both Glen and Dylan missed wide open goal opportunities at times that would have kept us very much in the hunt while Vincents could do no wrong at the other end of the field, hitting some magnificent points. We dominated possession for quite a while in the second half but didn't get the reward on the score board and Vinnies were again very economical in their shooting. Disappointing result for sure but plenty of good displays from Gavin in particular, Scrappy, Collie, ED, Gary, Dylan, Niall won a lot of ball, Archie when he came in late.

Senior footballers get their league campaign off to a winning start

AFL1 St Sylvester’s 0-9 Skerries Harps 0-6 Our senior football team opened their league campaign with a hard-fought win over newly promoted Skerries Harps, who brought a large crowd to Broomfield for the game (hopefully we can do the same for our away games!). The match was played in very difficult conditions with persistent rain and a strong wind blowing down from the car park end.

'The Hoss' captained Dublin

'The Hoss' captained Dublin

Nice recognition fro Ross Hazely, one of our most consistent high performers over the past ten years and one of my favourite players at St Sylvesters, captaining Dublin in a challenge at TCD last Sunday. Gary Sweeney also showed well in this game and both lads can be seen this Sunday against Skerries at Broomfield.

We need a volunteer from our Football supporters

With the new AFL1 starting in Broomfield next Sunday it would be really nice to see us using the scoreboard again at senior games. I always think we miss a little of the athmosphere and pomp by not using the scoreboard at these premier Dublin games but we need a volunteer to step up and take responsibility. Most mentors have the keys and I'm sure Cotsie or Conor or one of the senior metors will set you up. Come on, someone from the crowd please step forward every week and make this happe. Next Sunday sees Ciaran and Derek Roche bring their newly promoted Skerries Harps to Broomfield for their first ever AFL1 game We wish them luck, just not as much as we wish Syls luck, of course. And it would be nice to see the scoreboard used for all games on pitch 1, adds a bit.

Seniors win at Maurs

Seniors win at Maurs

St V de P Cup Four point win I believe, always nice to start the season with a win. Syls played a fairly direct brand of football. Lots of new players getting a run was also encouraging. The game was dominated by a gale force wind straight down the field and a penallty mid first half with the wind behind them kept Maurs in the game and Syls were slow enough to kill off the game in the second half.

Junior Bs win at Na Fianna

Junior Bs win at Na Fianna

Duffy Cup Na Fianna 1-05 St Sylvesters 3-11 Excellent win in awful conditions against a decent looking Na Fianna. To be fair, we have quite a bit of experience on the field so we won't be getting too far ahead of ourselves but nice to get the win having worried about our ability to field given all the other games on today. Jamie Grey sealed the deal with a net ripping drive mid second half against a gale and this finally put the result beyond doubt. Ronan Gaine, Eoin Manning, Paddy McIntyre, Sean Quinn all did very well in a side where Mark Reilly, the Roches and Kevin Meehan gave us a solid base. Phil Murray did the business in goal when asked by a few good Fianna efforts and Vinnie Kirrane had an excellent all round game.

Junior Bs start with a draw

We were caught a little off guard with a late addition to the fixture list but nonetheless there was a great turnout and thanks to all the lads who ensured we did not go short. We're sti;; looking for players as we will need a good panel to get us through the year. Training is with the Junior A team on Tuesday and Thursdays at 8.00pm thanks to Shay Byrne and his team. We drew 0-13 to 1-10 against Man O War. We had 21 players and everyone got at least half a game. There was a good crowd up there too. It was great to the likes of Shay Keogh (5 points), Derek Roche (3 points), Ciaran Roche (2 points),Kev Meehan (1 point) back playing again. Paudy Tracey and Killian Haverty chipped in a point each too.

U21 footballers win the B Championship

U21 FC B Final St Sylvesters 2-13 Raheny 0-13 U21 is a great competition and this final between two young fast teams lived up to the expectations of a large crowd. Raheny raced into an early lead with some excellent points but a long ball into the square from Jack was fielded by Collie Byrne who beat his man to goal and Syls never really looked back. An unnecessary sending off of one of the Raheny backs took some of the sting out of the game. As often happens, we lost our way for a while and Raheny played a more direct game, closing the gap to to three points with about 10 minutes to play.

U21s impressive semi final win over Clontarf

U21 FC B semi final St Sylvesters 3-12 Clontarf 1-05 A big Syls crowd showed up expecting a tough championship encounter. Not so many from Clontarf and the respective performances seemed to match the crowds enthusiasm. There was a minutes silence observed in memory of Declan Morris who passed away recently. Although more recently associated with hurling, Declan was also a great supported of our footballers and the Dubs and the three Morris lads are all duel players.
