A sharp and determined performance by Syls U-12

U12 Raheny 1-6 St. Sylvesters 2-14 A sharp and determined performance by Syls U-12 A on Saturday secured a well deserved win against a strong Raheny side at St. Ann’s Park. Syls controlled most of the play in the first half, despite playing into a stiff wind. Slight over elaboration in front of goal and some wayward finishing prevented Syls from building up a comfortable lead. However, they did pick off some nice scores, one in particular that started from a well placed pass from goalie Harry Barnes through to Daniel Denneher and onto half forward Bobby McCarthy who finished neatly

The Malahide boys were unfortunate to go in at half time trailing by 1-3 to 5 points, largely due to lucky goal from Raheny late in the half.

As the second half got underway it was clear that the tactical switch ordered by coaches Brian Barnes and Paul Rheinhart at half time would pay dividends. With the strong wind at their backs, Syls abandoned their traditional short passing game to play long passes into their dominant full forward line. Marcus Young was the target and his strength allowed his forward colleagues and marauding midfielder Luke Hughes to enjoy plenty of possession deep in the home team’s territory.

Ben O’Neill was outstanding in defence for Syls and was ably assisted by Osian Dullaghan, Josh Rheinhart and Aaron Lynch in keeping things tight at the back. As a result, Raheny struggled to respond to the Syls second half onslaught. Indeed the home team were only able to add three points to their tally in the second period, while Syls racked up a further 2 goals and 9 points, leaving the Malahide boys a comfortable 11 points ahead at the finish.
