Dublin Community Games Finals - Santry - 3rd/4th July 2010
St Sylvesters GAA club were well represented at the 2010 Dublin Community Games Finals held in Santry Stadium on Sat/Sun last as the Malahide team had one of its most successful years ever. As the tired athletes adjourned to the clubhouse on Sunday evening they could be proud of the fact that their efforts had helped Malahide to achieve 3rd place in Dublin in the overall award . .
. . from the more than 50 competing parishes. Almost all the Malahide
athletes succeeded in making it through the early rounds and
semi-finals of competitions on Saturday and as the finals were been run
on Sunday practically every event had at least one Malahide
representative still in contention. There were numerous Silver and
Bronze medal winners across the various Track and Field and Relay
events, many hard luck stories and some brave athletes
who competed despite carrying injuries. Pride of place however must go
to our 4 gold medals winners who will now go forward to represent
Malahide and Dublin in the national finals in Athlone in August.
St Sylvester's and Dublin rising star in ladies football, Seanna
Reilly, proved that it is not just in football that she excels as she
showed blistering pace to take the Girls U16 100m in some style. Her
younger sister Caoimhe, not to be outdone, showed extraordinary
determination to claim top spot in a dramatic finish in the Girls U10
100m to round off a great day for the Reilly family.
The most impressive looking cup of the day was presented in the
Boys U12 'Puc Fada' Competition. Daniel Deneher showed nerves of steel
to claim gold with his final puck of the day which measured 82 meters.
This perpetual cup has some illustrious names engraved on it, most
notably Niall Quinn (1978) and St Syls stars John Coughlan (1997)
and Niall Coughlan (1999). No pressure Daniel in the years to come !
The proudest man in Santry at the weekend however, had to be St
Sylvester's Niall Guiden as his aptly-named "Dream Team" cruised to
victory in the 4 x 100m Under 10 Mixed Relay. They coasted through the
earlier rounds of this competition and were very installed as firm
favourites for the final on Sunday. The shouts of encouragement could
be heard in Malahide as the Guiden twins Sean and Caitlin performed the
perfect baton change on the first bend and then the finishing speed of
Caoimhe Reilly and Michael Kelly ensured this event was won in
magnificent style.
Well done to all the competitors who marched with pride behind the
Malahide banner in the opening parade and represented the parish with
distinction. A big thank you to the large number of parents and
supporters who attended for the 2 long days in Santry and especially
the local Community games organisers who put a lot of effort into
preparing the team each year. Good luck to those who will be competing
in Athlone in August,
