Pat ‘SQUEE’ Durnin from the hill and Paul Kelly from Chalfont were honored along with 4 other recipient’s at a dinner dance for their work with the Young Ireland’s GAA club in Philadelphia. They received awards as the original founders of the club which was founded in 1985

Along with founding the club they played, managed, chaired among other

things.

Squee was chairman for 10 years and also managed for another 8 years. He

played for the club for 17 years.

Paul was captain of the American league championship side that were crowned

champions of America in 1988. He also was player/manager of a beaten

finalist in 1991

Squee managed the original championship winning side while also playing. He

just so happened to also be the clubs chairman.

The club now in its 28th  year has won numerous Philadelphia league and

championship’s since the early days but the 2 American league final

victories will always be the crown jewel in the trophy case.

Paul left Malahide in April 1981 and Squee followed him in March 1983. They

played for the Shamrock’s club before joining with a few other exiles to

form the Young Ireland’s GAA club.****

Squee was the chairman for the first 6 years and helped along with the

other founders to build a club that is admired throughout the entire USA.

Squee says it’s kind of ironic that when Syls were reforming in the late

70’s and early 80’s they were front and center in the reforming of the club

and he remembers knocking on peoples doors looking for funds the purchase

what is now the club house and bar. They took this experience with them to

America and used it to be the backbone of a club that plays the great game

we all love. ****
