Girls reach Minor Championship final
When the
Minor girls had beaten Raheny they went down to support Michael and the
rest of the lads in their win.
Saturday night was one of the best evenings in the Club for a long
time with the new Intermediate Championship hurlers (now Senior for
first time) being piped in, the Senior Footballers in the play offs, and
the Minor Girls in the Championship Final.
In the Minor game the girls were far too strong for Raheny though
being well beaten Raheny to their credit never gave up. In this semi
final Syls had only one official Minor player with the appearance for
the first time this year of Aisling Gill (also an international cricket
player for Ireland). Aisling has been plagued by injury all year. These
girls have been together 8 seasons since 2005 and have won medals each
year. The highlights for them were beating the Dublin Féile and All
Ireland Champions Ballyboden by 5 points in 2009, and winning the
Division 1, U11 League undefeated in 2011. The main reason for this team
consistently performing at the top leval over the 8 years is due to the
very hard work and expertise of Declan Hetherton. We could not have had
a better trainer over this period and he deserves a huge amount of
credit for what he has achieved.
The Final will be against O'Dwyers of Balbriggan probably on
Saturday 20th October 2012. and it will be a much tougher game than the
four teams we have beaten in the Championship so far. O'Dwyers beat us
in the League in the spring and are a strong team. However the girls
have improved with the return of a few players and training over the
summer with Declan and will be also in with a 50/50 chance in the final.
Following the game on Saturday most of the girls turned out on a
very wet Monday for Scoil Iosa and beat Gael Colaiste Reachrain in the
Leinster Collages Championship first round Scoil Iosa 5-8 Gael Colaiste
Reachrain 0-3. Great credit should go to John Mangan manager of Scoil
Iosa who also came out to support the girls on Saturday.
It looks like there will be more good days ahead for the girls. Cailiní Mulach Íde abu.
