Good Championship wins for both hurling teams

Two big wins in adult hurling - looks like the wheels are back on the wagon - reports from Danny O'Connor.

Thursday 7th May at St Annes Park  Junior  D  Championship

St Sylvester’s 1-11, Raheny 0-6

Midweek away matches are always a problem with traffic and few appreciate the sacrifices players have to make to get to games on time and then focus on the game. This time it worked  and a very mean fullback line conceded no goals although we were helped by the crossbar and by some poor shooting  by the Raheny forwards. Down 4 pts to one after 20 minutes a good last 10 minutes saw us going in at half time after facing the wind down by just one point at 4 pts to 5. The second half was evenly contested and with 15 minutes to go we only led by one point. Then a very good solo goal by Barry Cowley made it 4 up but it took until the last five minutes  in the wind and rain to get the next scores to make the margin comfortable.

A good competitive match with no quarter given but also no yellow cards and thanks to the travelling support who got value from the trip. The backs were very solid with Willie Reynolds and Paul Christie particularly good and Anthony Dunne very impressive  in goals. Neil Brannigan worked very hard at midfield and Graham Morris show steady improvement at half forward. Scorers Barry Cowley 1-2, Niall O Connor 0-4f, Mick Tolster 0-2, Declan Tolster 0-1(65) Eoghan Duggan and Kieran Falvey 0-1 each. Now 2 out of 3 so still hopeful of qualifying for quarter final.

Saturday 9th May 2009. at Clonshaugh ,

Junior A Hurling Championship          St Sylvesters 3-14 , Craobh Chiaráin 3-7.

Playing against a strong westerly wind a goal in the first minute by our star full forward on the day Conor Mc Cafferty was the ideal start, but Ciaráns had other ideas and were in the lead midway through the half with two Stephen Carelton goals .A very good move near half time saw us getting a second well taken goal and we led by 2-6 to 2-4 at half time. The second half wasn’t the easy run that might have been expected and although David Keogh got an early goal, Stephen Carelton was back for his third shortly afterwards to reduce the gap to 2 points. However Syls settled and picked off a number of good points starting with 2 in as many minutes by Colm O Connor to win comfortably in the end.

In the backs, Alan Morris and Ian Mc Cafferty were very impressive and Daragh O Flaherty had an excellent game at wing back. Scorers Conor Mc Cafferty 2-4, David Keogh 1-1, Colm O Connor 0-4 (2f), Daragh O Flaherty  0-2(1f), Enda O Flaherty, Andrew Richardson and Fergus Rooney 0-1 each. Still all to play for with 2 wins out of 3 and 3 of the six teams in the group to qualify.
