Great show in Feile by our U14s

Although we didn't win in the end we went close in reaching our first Feile na nÓg Football Final since 2005 and only bowed out to a very fine St Brigids outfit. The lads were particularly pleased with our group win over Na Fianna where we played the best football this team have ever produced. We had to fight really hard to overcome Thomas Davis with a late Mark McCormack goal on Sunday morning and that may have proved our undoing in the final. We gave up an early goal against Brigids in the final in Parnell, fought out way back to 0-4 to 1-1 but the effort and the big field proved too much as Brigids dominated the second half to win well in the end.

Syls u14s played 3 games on Saturday in the Feile, winning all our games to qualify as winners in our group. The team played excellent football on the Saturday to beat Naomh Barrog, Clontarf and Na Fianna Our style of play was praised by many independent and opposition supporters / mentors.

Of the two div 1 groups, this was the toughest group and given the hot conditions the team put a huge amount of effort to overcome 3 very good teams.

To help the lads recover for the semi-final on Sunday we brought the team to Portmarnock beach for a dip in the freezing water.  In the semi-final v Thomas Davis we managed to see off a very determined Thomas Davis side by a point. We made this game a bit harder than we should have by not converting some of our scoring opportunities. I was always confident we would win once we kept creating the chances!

So to the final on Sunday afternoon we faced a very determined and well organised St Brigids team. We got off to a bad start by conceding a freak goal, managed to get back in the game but just found the intensity a bit much for us in the 2nd half. We had spent a lot of effort on the Saturday to qualify.

This was a great achievement by the U14 players who to a man put in great effort to represent Sylvester’s  and to become only the 2nd team(I think) in Syls to reach the Feile final. The players are a credit to our club and deserve great respect for their effort and the sporting way they represented the club.

Many thanks to the great support we received, special mention to Fergus Byrne for first aid , Tony Cooney supply of water etc. John Keenan for photos, Brendan Ryan/Liam Ryan ordering and distributing the Feile bags and hoddies to the players. Thanks to the u13s players and to Brian and Paul for their support, hopefully they can go one better next year, no pressure!! Also , thanks to Clontarf  as our host club for their hospitality.

Lastly, a special mention to Eoin Ryan and David Maloney who were injured and missed the Feile. They were there to support the team and helped us with warm-ups , getting water on to the lads and for putting the team first!!

Thanks Ciaran
