Historic day for hurling in Fingal area

IT was a historic day in Ridgewood as Fingal minors fielded a team for the first time under Willie Bourke. Their opponents were Armagh who take on Derry in the first round of the Ulster Championship and they were inspired up front by full forward, Mattie Lennon. Lennon, whose father manages the Monaghan senior hurlers, was very much the driving force for Armagh as they built up a 1-10 to 0-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

But with Stephen Somani having a fine game at centre back for the home side, Fingal began to get in top and were to find the back of the net on 20 minutes when Colm Byrne beat the keeper with a low drive. And following a point from Eoin O'Connor, Fingal then netted for the second time when the impressive Niall O' Callaghan from the Castleknock knock finished home from an acute angle to put just a goal between the sides. However two late points was to see Armagh up 1-12 to 2-4 at the break but Fingal were to start the second half very well with Ciaran O'Sullivan, O'Callaghan (2) Michael O'Donnell and Colm Byrne all pointing in quick succession to really put it up to the orchard county. Fingal who only met together as a panel as Wednesday night continued to apply the pressure before Armagh pulled away once more to register two scores from the left hand side.
