Hurlers qualify for A Championship Final

We almost got off to a perfect start in very tough conditions but Martin Ormonds 21 yard free well saved by the Faughs Keeper. Martin duly converted the resulting ’65. We had the benefit of the strong wind in the first half & opened up a three point lead. A wonderful long range point from Conor McCafferty was the highlight. Credit to Faughs who pulled themselves back into the game & with 10 minutes to go in the first half there was only 1 point between the teams. However Colm O Connor struck a crucial goal shortly before half time & allowed us to go in 1-06 to 0-04 to half time.

Junior A Championship Semi Final. Syls 2-12 Faughs 1-9

Scorers Martin Ormonde 0-6 (5f) Tom Reddy 1-2 Colm O'Connor 1-0 Fergus Rooney 0-2 Conor McCafferty 0-2

We knew that we would need to work even harder in the second playing into the wind & up the hill. The guys really stood up to this task & put in a huge defensive performance hunting in packs & not allowing Faughs any time or space in the second half. The second half started well for Syls with David Keogh being fouled & Martin Ormond striking sweetly over from distance.  Playing into the wind the half backs were under a lot of pressure from long clearances from Faughs but team captain Enda O Flaherty led the line excellently. David Casey dropped deep to great effect & mopped anything that came down the middle. The full back line marshalled by Ian McCafferty were outstanding, not giving an inch to a dangerous full forward line from Faughs.  The huge defensive performance meant that Faughs were not able to make any inroads into the half-time lead. Fergus Rooney was introduced with 20 minutes to go & promptly chipped in with 2 stylish points. Tom Reddy goaled soon afterwards to leave 10 points between the teams.  With the work rate & defensive effort that the lads were putting in it was always going to be very hard for Faughs to pull this lead back & despite a late goal conceded we ran out 6 point winners. It should be noted that the hard work wasn’t just confined to the back line but the midfield & forwards also put in the hard graft from the first whistle to the end.

Overall we were delighted with the win. It’s the first time in 17 years that this team has reached a championship final.  Special mention to two of the stalwarts of the team, Hilary Murray Hession & Ian McCafferty who I’m told were involved in that game.  The final is fixed for next Sunday at 1pm in Parnell Park again Clan na Gael Fontenoy. They will represent an even tougher obsctacle & the lads would really appreciate any support on the day.
