Intermediate Football Update

Over the last couple of weeks the Intermediate footballers have had three important wins in the cup and vitally, the 1st round of the intermediate championship. The end result of these games is that they have now qualified for the semi-final of the Loving Cup and we will in the hat when the draw for the 2nd round of the IFC is made on 12/06. Here's a quick round up of the games.

Loving Cup 01/05/2013

Whitehall Colmcilles 0-02 St. Sylvester's 1-12

After a scrappy first half which saw the sides go in level at 2pts each Syls stepped up and took control in the Second half. We scored 1-10 in this period while holding our opponents scoreless. Aidan Relihan was the scorer in chief contributing 5pts while Mark Finnerty kept up his impressive goal scoring record by grabbing another on in this game. Kevin Casey was a constant thorn is the side of the Whitehall defence. At the back Conor Quinn put in another superb performance at fullback. Eoghan McGinty also did a great job in covering for regular midfield maestro Brian McCarthy.

Intermediate Football Championship  11/05/2013

St. Sylvester's 1-20 Eirn's Isle 0-02

This game had the potential to be a bit of a bananna skin but thankfully our lads never let their guard slip and ran out comfortable winners in the end. Right from the start it was clear that we had approached the game with an attitude that made sure we were never going to be caught out.  There was an intensity of effort and work rate shown by the players from throw in to final whistle that was a real credit to them. Brian McCarthy was the stand out player on the day. He controlled the midfield area and chipped in with some fine scores.  The half forward like of Camper, Ronan Palmer and Hacker worked really hard and caused the Eirns Isle defence to turn over pocession in poisitions that we were able to capitalise on. All in all it was a very satisfying performance from every one on the day.

Loving Cup 18/05/2013

Naomh Barrog 0-05 St. Sylvester's 0-08

It's not possible to win every game by 13 or 14pts and there are times when a team had to dig deep to win games. This game against Naomh Barrog was certianlly one of those. Missing many of the players that started the week before due to college exams and injuries we never quite hit the performance levels we reached 7 days earlier. But while not playing to our potential our lads were able to  dig out the result we needed from this game to achieve our aim of making the semi-finals of this competition. Hacker worked very hard again around the half forward line and the preformances of Brian Shaloe and Conor Quinn in defence ensured that Nh Barrog were never quite able to capitalise on some of the pocession they we gave away. With 5 minutes left the home team had reduced the lead to 1pt but late scores Ado and David Sexton made sure we held on for a 3 pt win. We must now await the results from the other games in the group to see if we have a home semi-final.
