Inters big win at Garda - football going well

Joy Cup Semi-Final Wed 04/07/12 : Garda 0-11 St Sylvesters 1-12. Syls Intermediate football team had a hard fought win in Westmanstown against a fancied Garda team in the Joy Cup semi-final on Wednesday night and now look forward to playing in the Joy Cup Final for the second year running.

The game started at a frantic pace and Syls opened the scoring with points from Brian McCarthy and a well struck free from Conor Meaney. To their credit the home team battled hard and leveled the score about 10 minutes into the half. The Syls forwards were proving a handful for the Garda defence and the game took a huge turn after 15 minutes when Kevin Clarke's high flighted ball ended up in the Garda net. Immediately after the score Syls were reduced to 14 men when the referee produced a red card. Sys entered the break two points up with the score 1-5 to 0-6.

The second half commenced with both teams sharing the early scores. All six Syls defenders put in a great display of hard hitting defending and limited the Garda attack to long distance efforts. Ja and Conor took control of the middle which resulted in quick ball to the forwards who duly took their scores. Clarke and McCarthy posed a constant threat and although Garda battled hard towards the end Syls ran out winners by 4 points on a score line of 1-12 to 0-11. All four subs introduced, Manix Ryan, Collie Burke, Alan Morris and Dave Keogh, had an impact on this fine victory.

Adult football within the club is flying high at the moment. Senior team are going well in AFL1 and are in the Vincent de Paul Cup semi-final and looking forward to the next round of the Senior Championship, Intermediates are challenging for promotion from AFL3, in the Joy Cup Final and in the next round of Inter Championship, Junior A's still unbeaten in AFL7, in the Parson Cup semi-final and in the Championship semi-final in early September. Junior B's are challenging for promotion from AFL9 and Minor Footballers are challenging in Division 1 of the League with the Championship to come in September. Minor B's are struggling for numbers at present but are looking forward to the start of the Championship at the end of the Summer.

With all teams performing well to date the youth policy and transition from Juvenile to Adult football within the club is thriving with eight of the last nights intermediate team still U21 which together with the number of young players involved with the Senior and Junior teams is a great credit to the mentors and to the structures put in place for Adult football at the beginning of the season.

Keep it up lads and let's hope it's a successful campaign by the end of 2012.
