LOVING CUP FINAL - St. Vincent's 0-07 St-Sylvester's 0-09 Our Intermediate footballers claimed their first (and hopefully not their last) piece of silverware with a hard fought win over a very competitive St. Vincent's side in PNU on Saturday evening. The rain that had been threatening all after finally arrived right before throw-in so the conditions ensured that this game wouldn't be the high scoring shootouts that the previous two meeting between these sides were.

This was a much more tactical affair and St. Sylvester's greater ability to work the ball into scoring positions in the second half was ultimately to prove the difference.

Syls played with a strong wind in the first half but could not make the best use the conditions as scores were hard to come by. We missed several chances to give ourselves a strong lead. Brian McCarthy's long range free right on the stroke of half time was only our 4th point of the half. At the other end we were defending superbly with Niall Higgins and Danny Greenan playing particularly well so despite only having scored 4pts we still went in at the break 1 up.

The second half performance was a tremendous display of patient and intelligent football. Time and time again we held onto the ball until the right pass was available, many times drawing fouls in positions that suited our free takers. Kevin Casey was extremely effective at this as the Vincent's defenders found his pace very hard to handle. Alan Sexton was also proving to be a very effective outlet for our attacks. Points at crucial times by Ado Relihan, Brian McCarthy, Alan Sexton and Finno help to build up a 5 point lead going into the last 10 minutes. While Vincent's were able to pull a couple of scores back in the closing stages we never looked like conceding any goals and held out the win by 2pts. This win will give the lads a real boost going into this Saturday's vital "top of the table" league game with Nh Barrog.
