JHC C QF St Sylvester’s 0-8 Ballyboden 2-15 The game started with a fine point from play by a very lively Mannix Ryan for the home side. Ballyboden soon got into their stride and took the lead with some good long range points. They were finding it easier to pick out the man in space and their hurling was very tidy. The also had a potent attack that picked off two fine first half goals and that was the difference between the teams at half time

Sylvester’s goalkeeper was David Kennedy was busy and made a number of fine saves. Colm O’Connor made one great catch and was very competitive under the puck outs. Pat Hoyne kept the scoreboard ticking over for St Sylvester’s, scoring with placed balls from frees and sixty fives. The Galway man belied the years with a great performance and has lost none of his competitive instinct. Sylvester’s defended with great resolve with the experienced Ciaran Murray, Derek Roche and Des Lehane working hard to stem the tide of attacks. Oisin Klinkenberg’s man marking was admirable against a series of very good opponents. Killian Kirrane also defended his corner with great resolve.

Ballyboden learned from the first half and did not concede any frees within score able distances in the second half. They scored some fine points from play with some very good support play and they defended well and were very sharp in closing down the Sylvester’s forward line.

The home side needed goals but failed to make any clear cut chances. Derek Morris and Greg Hannon were prominent in attack for Sylvester’s and substitutes Conor Dwyer and Claude Scully worked hard but the much needed goal didn’t materialise.

David Kennedy in a man of the match performance made a series of excellent saves in the second half to deny Ballyboden. There was no lack of effort from the home side but Ballyboden’s overall superiority meant that they ran out comfortable winners in the end. Referee Liam O’ Brien’s performance was excellent. He controlled the game, let it flow and was hardly noticed.
