Minor hurlers win in a thriller

MHC C St Sylvesters 2-19 Kilmacud Crokes 3-11 AET When Colm Byrne picked out Sean Kane who goaled for Syls to lead for the first time with minutes remaining it looked good for our lads. We repelled Crokes attack twice but then they goaled off a broken ball in our square and, well, it didn't look quite so good. We didn't despair, Brendán put the ball in deep, Byrne won a 21 yard free and Flynn equalised to take us to extra time. Great stuff.

Thanks to John Keogh and Killian Kirrane for the pictures.

IMG_6825.JPG And a few from Bernard, including Kane's goal and Kevin O'Flynn's equaliser

We started slowly and only for David Kennedy making two terrific saves Crokes would have been out of sight before we left the bed. Slowly we got into the game, the fullback line of Conor Quinn, Conor Ryan and Alan Kavanagh finally got to grips with very fast opposition, Gareth McGrath added some speed to our halfback line, Meaney, O'Flynn, Maloughney and Sean Kane pointing and we we only two points adrift at the break but facing into a blustery cold wind for the second half.

Defensively we kept it very tight in the second half, Kavanagh growing in stature as the game progressed, well supported by Flood and Stephen, Scuby and O'Flynn again worked their socks off, in the middle, Thomas Richardson, Kevin Maloughney and Conor Dwyer winning their ball and the gutsey Kane pointing then goaling before O'Flynn levelled at the death.

A few frees from Kevin and a point from Meaney gave us a little daylight then a kicked goal by Collie Byrne sealed the issue. Crokes goaling with the last puck their only score in extra time.

There was a great crowd to appreciate a smashing effort from both teams. Watch out for details of the final, will be well worth seeing.
