Report on Ladies Leinster SF
On top of this, some nervousness crept into their game, with too many easy passes going astray and giving the advantage to the opposition. As a result the girls went in at half time two points down, instead of being well ahead.
The second half brought an improvement in scoring performance, with Sinead Aherne in particular returning to her best scoring form and Niamh McEvoy making some strong runs that lead to some excellent points. Syls job was made that bit harder by the defensive wall put up by Tinahely, one feature of which was their putting two players on the goal line whenever Syls looked like they might go for goal. The introduction of Anne Clarke, kept in reserve during the first half due to an injury, made a big difference, as she initiated several attacking moves from half back, joining in again as they moved upfield. However, this was offset by some jitters in defence that let the Tinahely star corner forward Lucy Mulhall in for a couple of goals.
Having been trailing for most of the match, Syls went ahead with around ten minutes to go, got to what seemed like a safe lead of four points, only for Tinahely to pull it back to a point with their third goal. With a minute to go, Syls got back to four points with a classic Aherne goal made by an inch perfect pass from Anne Clarke. The final whistle came as a great relief.
Scorers for Syls were: Sinead Aherne 1– 7, Niamh McEvoy 0 – 5, Katy Slattery 0 – 4.
The final will be played next Sunday, 21st Oct., against St. Laurence's of Kildare. Keep an eye out for time and place and be sure to come and support the girls.
