Seniors make it two wins out of two this week

After the win by the Junior 1 team against Thomas Davis yesterday evening, the senior team rounded off a good week for our adult footballers with a hard fought victory over Trinity Gaels at rain-soaked, windswept Broomfield today (Saturday 11th July). The few brave souls who turned up in the driving rain to witness this game were rewarded by the lads who provided a committed battling performance to win by the narrowest of margins against a Trinity Gaels team which never gave up and pressed hard for an equaliser right up to the final whistle.

St Sylvesters  1 - 4    Trinity Gaels  0 - 6

Charlie Redmond has certainly moulded a well drilled side and they made us fight all the way for the win.

Considering that we were without John Coughlin, Brian Sexton, Dermot Kinsella, Adam Keaney (not to mention Russe and the other lads who are away), it was a great result. Also, Airy wasn't able to start due to a back injury but came on in the second half to help the defence.  On the negative note, our midfielder Shane O'Connor was carried off injured before half time and we wish him a speedy recovery.

That's two wins out of two this week (following on from the win against Brigid's on Wednesday) and means that we are moving nicely up the table and remain in contention for a top four spot.

First half we were against a strong cross wind but went in at the break just a point down (2 - 3), with points from Ross Hazely and Aidan Relihan. So there was reason to be optimistic going in to the second half. However, Gaels started the brighter in the second half and were winning more of the possession.  Their pressure yielded a penalty which, if converted, would have put them four points ahead. However, they were denied by a great save from Dominic McDonnell.  Minutes later pressure from the lads at the other end led to us getting the vital goal, finished by Ronnie Carroll, which turned the game in our favour. Points from Eoin Fanning and Darren Clarke were cancelled out by points from Gaels and they got within one point to make for a tight finish. The experienced Brendan O'Brien got most of their scores. However, our lads held on and deserved the win. Once again our backs were  rock solid, with Cian Cleere giving another commanding performance at full back. Ross Hazely had a fine game in midfield as did Eoin Bennis at centre forward. But, in truth, it was difficult to pick anyone out in a real team effort.
