Seniors pipped at the post in Saggart

Could have won, should have drawn but unfortunate to lose by a late point. Never an easy place to play, we started well, fell away badly, took over for a while but let it slip in the end. This was our first loss of the year and the lads will be a little disappointed not held out for the win. Our support was not the best either, hopefully we will get The Syls out in force for the first round of the Championship next Thursday at Portmarnock against Towers of Clondalkin.

AFL1 St Marys 0-16 St Sylvesters 2-9

Early frees from Aido and Darren and a nice point by Eoin Fanning got us out of the blocks early before Marys, lead by a classy looking Blaine Kelly, rattled off a string of points to lead by three. A free from Darren and a well taken goal by Aido after some neat interchanges brought us back into the game. Marys dominence around the middle showed, however and the knocked over another four points to lead 0-10 to 1-4 at the break.

We were a little brighter on the restart, Ross and John got a grip of the middle, Jude Sullivan and Eoin Fanning started spraying the ball around, Darren blazed uncharacteristically wide from close range, scored a free and Eoin Fanning a great goal from close in. A couple of frees from Darren, point from Benno and another sweet effort from play from Darren had us ahead 2-9 to 0-13 but Marys came again, knocked over two, Aido hit the foot of the post, Jude shot wide from the 40 and Niall missed from close and Marys broke down field for the winner. Darren had a late effort but was well blocked.

The defense had a tough time with a a few nippy forwards. Rob Wallace made at least two top saves, great to see Barry back in the corner, Airy and Cian kept them out from goal. McGurk, Beano and David were probably our best line, all the time trying to push forward.

Good to see Collie McIntyre back in senior football and Fionn Carney looked comfortable when introduced for Cian.
