Seniors win in the league against Ballymun

AFL1 St Sylvesters 0-13 Ballymun Kickams 0-11 A good win in a good game where both sides at full strength are obviously sharpening up for the business end of the championship. This was a more thorough test than the game earlier in the week and, while we never looked very comfortable we were only behind once late in the first half and finished the half up 7 to 6.

Defensively we were excellent. Kickams, who scored some very direct points never really threatened our full back line where Cian, Barry and Brian were very tight, no zonal crap with these lads. Kickams brought their corner forward to the middle in the second half with the wind but it backfired on them 'cos it freed up McGurk to cover every blade of grass, win hard ball and conslidate the middle for Syls. Our half line of Galvin, Beano and Airy were coping well until Beano went off before half time with a leg injury. Ross replaced him and a minor reshuffle with Campers and Kinsella seemed to give us an even more solid look around the middle. Jockser played his second game back in the week and coped well with a strong Kickams midfield and shook off one or two heavy challenges.

Leading by a point at half time looked a little ominous for us facing a fairly strong wind blowing down the hill in the second half. Funny how it works, however, and the open space in our forward line suited our quick transfer approach and we were always  more dangerous than the much vaunted Ballymun forwards. Eoin Bennis spurned two clear goal opportunities(promises the goals will come) but was busy all evening, scoring two great points and contributing well in general play. Eoin Fanning (1), Shane Roche(1 free) and Campers(1) was also busy and effective and Aido and Darren contributed 7 or 8 points between them and were generally very economical. Ronnie Carroll looked very sharp when introduced with about 12 minutes,  carrying two defenders on his back at one stage.

Special mention to Diarmuid Kinsella for a superb display just behind the mid field and along with David, Airy, Campers, Jockser and Ross they put a blanket across the middle in the second half for our best win in a number of years.

Must also mention our understudy keeper, Rob Wallace, who didn't put a foot wrong and who's kickouts were hitting the opposition 45 in the first half
