Super Syls Girls Win Through to Championship Final

A game of two halves is an old cliché in football terms and that is certainly what we got on Kiltipper Road in Tallaght on Wednesday night. Syls & Davis had played each other on two occasions already this year with both sides having a win a piece, so this championship semi-final was always going to be a close affair.

Syls opened the scoring through Sinead Aherne in the first couple of minutes but a fiery Davis team came at us at pace and rattled up some quick points and we trailed by 8pts to 3pts after the first quarter. The midfield battle was proving crucial with our own Niamh McEvoy & Sinead Tracy pitched against the Davis pair led by the brilliant Dublin & All Star player, Siobhain McGrath. The superb Nicole Owens rattled the net twice after a some superb moves from the forward line to get Syls back in it followed by a great Fiona Aherne point, but a rampant Davis team hit back with a goal and 5pts to leave our girls trailing by 6pts at the break.

We knew that we had not played to our potential and there was some serious soul searching done at the break, but this team has a lot of character and pride in the Syls jersey and were determined not to leave this game behind them.

We outscored the Davis team by 4pts to 1pt in the first 10 minutes and it was game on. Niamh & Sinead Treacy started to get the upper hand in the midfield battle and Viv & Sinead Aherne found a lot more space in the forward line. Nicole got her 3rd goal of the game but Davis kept themselves ahead with well taken points. We entered the final 10 minutes trailing by a goal and something special was needed to get us back in it, and that's what we got. Tracy McCrudden took over in goal from Emer Treacy who took up a half-forward position and with her first possession of the ball went straight at the Davis backline to hit home a super goal.

This hugely lifted the team and we won quick ball all over the pitch to supply, Viv, Eimear Hughes & Katie Slattery who all scored crucial points. Davis did not lie down and responded with a point before hitting the crossbar which led to a great goal line clearance from Mel Flanagan. As we entered the final 5 minutes the defence led by Michele Walls & Aimee stood strong and we held posession smartly to wind down the clock.

There were great celebrations at the final whistle on the Syls line. A feeling of a job well done, but we can do a lot better as a team, and will need to in the final, which is down to be played on the 7th August in

Balgriffin, against the winners of Raheny and St Marks.

Well done to all 25 of the girls in the squad on the night.

Final Score: Thomas Davis 1-18, St Sylvester's 4-12
