Syls Girls Championship Success Away to Ballyboden

The girls traveled to Ballyboden on Wednesday evening to kick off their championship campaign with a hard fought victory. The hosts had already beaten St Maurs in a 3 team group with the winners progressing to the semi-final. Only a victory would keep the Syls girls in the competition so it was a tough nights work ahead against a very fancied Boden outfit.

Katie Slattery got the girls off the mark early with some fine scores but the game was really tight and both teams traded points to keep the scoreline neck and neck. The Syls defence held firm throughout and soaked up some serious pressure before the break. Then struck Viv Lee with two super goals after great feeds from Sinead & Nicole to give the girls a 7 point lead at the break.

The second half started frantically and Boden started to apply some serious pressure on our goal. We were reduced to 14 players after a dubious 'sin bin'. Boden clawed it back to a 2 point gap at this stage and then were through on goal to take the lead, but to be denied by a feat of bravery by Lisa McIntyre in goal (described by the ref after the game as pure class).

Back to 15 players again, the girls strength, fitness & craft started to come through and we penned Boden back in their own half for long periods with 5 unanswered points. Aimee, Mel, Michele & Niamh G kept the defence tight to the end and Yas, Eimear, Niamh, Nicole & Sinead all scored to seal the win. Final score, Boden 1-12, Syls 5-9.

Next Wednesday sees the girls take on St Maurs in Broomfield at 7.30pm for a place in the semi-final. Don't miss this one, its sure to be another cracker.

Well done girls.
