Syls Girls Unlucky in Feile Final

Over the weekend the Dublin Girls Feile took place and Sylvesters hosted one of the group stages with eight teams visiting Broomfield on Saturday. Syls girls battled through their group winning well against Robert Emmets & Cuala but loosing to O'Tooles by 6-2 to 2-5. This meant they met St Annes in a playoff to see who made the semi-finals the following day. Syls girls were out of the blocks from the start and dominated the game to win 3-2 to 0-1.
The next morning the team & supporters made their way across the city to Kilmacud to face St Judes in the semi-final. The girls were in emphatic form and won by 3-6 to 1-2. Syls would meet northside rivals O'Tooles again in the final

This game was a real cracker with the scoreline really tight. The sides were level at the break but Syls started to dominate the early second half exchanges and racked up 3 quick points. However O'Tooles bounced back with two goals leading to a nailbiting finish. We needed a goal to draw level and got one with the final kick of the game with wild celebrations from the huge Malahide crowd. The extra time period was equally tight but the turning point was when O'Tooles got a controversial penalty and scored. As we pushed for a late equaliser we conceded again and the game was over. There were emotional scenes of disappointment at the final whistle but this team will be back as winners before long.

The girls put in a super effort over the weekend and did themselves and the club proud.

Well done to all involved to make Feile 2010 a memorable one. -

Anyone passing by Broomfield in Malahide on a very sunny morning last Saturday 17th April 2010 would have noticed the Club flag the National Flag and the Dublin Flag blowing in the slight wind. This is always the sign that something big is on in St Sylvester’s GAA Club and Saturday was no exception. Syls were one of four Clubs in Dublin hosting the Dublin Group stages of Féile Atha Cliath 2010. 8 clubs with their U14 panels, parents, brothers, sisters, other relations and supporters arrived in Broomfield early on Saturday morning. There was a carnival atmosphere with traditional Irish music blaring out over the P/A.

At around 9.45am the 8 panels stood in a group on the main pitch and sang along to the National Anthem. Following this the eight panels paraded around the pitch to the music of Luke Kelly singing Kelly the boy of Killane. The atmosphere reminded everyone of Final Day in Croke Park. The eight teams parading were St Sylvester’s, Cuala, O’Tooles, & Robert Emmets in group one and St Annes, Erin Go Brath, Scoil Uí Conaill & St Judes in group 2.

Sylvester’s had a good start against Robert Emmets winning 3-6 to 1-2. The scorers here were Roisín Rainey 2-0, Lisa Murphy 1-2, Seanna Reilly 0-3, and Aine McDonnell 0-1.

The next game proved to be much harder against O’Tooles who got off to a very good start and were leading 5-2 to 2-0 at half time. In fairness Syls did not have much luck in this game hitting the post twice and the ball bouncing over the keepers head only to role inches wide. Syls also scored a few points which could have been goals. Syls were much better in the second half outscoring O’Tools 0-5 to one goal. Final score however O’Tools 6-2 Syls 2-5. Scorers were Seanna Reilly 2-2 Aine McDonnell 0-1 and Emma Sullivan 1-0.

Syls were back to their very best in the next group game V Cuala winning 7-6 to1-0. Scorers were Roisín Rainey 2-1, Seanna Reilly 1-2, Hanna O’Neill 1-1, Carla Redmond, Susan Brennan and Louise Ryan 1 goal each. Lisa Murphy and Aoife O’Flynn, 1 point each.

This resulted in a play off between Syls and St. Annes the runner up in group 2. This was a game of 5 minutes each half and once again Syls were back to their very best winning 3-3 to 0-1. Scorers Seanna Reilly 2-2, Emma Sullivan 1-0, Aine McDonnell 0-1.

After a brilliant Saturday in Broomfield we were on our way to a semi- final for the second year running in Kilmacud Crokes Silver Park ground. Before leaving Broomfield we should thank everyone who made this such a special day and showed St. Sylvester’s in a very good light. Player’s supporter’s friend’s officials all helped to make this day. Huge thanks are due to the parents who supplied sandwiches coffee and who manned the shop all day. This is our third year to host Féile and we should be very proud of the effort put in.

Sunday morning 18th April 2010 proved to be another beautiful day. Syls team mentors supporters and the whole contingent was back in Broomfield once again at 10.00am. Every one was in great form with the thought of Syls U14 Girls in a semi-final v St Judes. To everyone’s delight Sylvester’s dominated this game and finished Syls 3-6 St. Judes 1-2. Scorers Seanna Reilly 2-3, Emma Sullivan 1-0, Lisa Murphy, Carla Redmond and Roisín Rainey 1 point each. We were now in the final v O’Tooles who had beaten Clontarf in the other semi Final. It has to be said that in Silver Park and later at Glenalbyn that John Sheridan and all his helpers from Kilmacud Crokes deserve great credit for their outstanding hospitality.

Once again the whole contingent was on the road again down the short distance to Kilmacud’s main pitch at Glenalbyn for the final. The atmosphere was outstanding with a piper leading the finalists in the parade. Most people would have Syls as underdogs for the final because of the Saturday result where there was a nine point win for O’Toole’s. However this proved to be a very even game. O’Tooles started with three points in the first few minutes. However Syls were awarded a penalty which was converted for the second time in the weekend by Roisin Rainey. Seanna Reilly added a point putting Syls one point ahead. However O’Toole’s levelled the score with a point before half time.

Syls started the second half very well with three quick points from Seanna Reilly. O’ Tooles came back with three goals leaving them six points ahead with three minutes to go. At this stage the Sylvester’s supporters really got behind the team shouting encouragement from the sideline. Seanna Reilly took the game by the scruff of the neck and moved at speed towards the O’Tooles goal. At the last second she passed to Hanna O’Neill who kicked to the net. From the kick out the ball went to Emma Sullivan who lobbed in a high ball in injury time which dropped in over the goalkeepers head. It was all level once again. The cheer from the Syls supporters could be heard in Malahide.

Extra time was 5 minutes each way. O’Tooles scored 2-1 in extra time while Sarah Whalley replied with one point for Syls. Scores for Syls were Seanna Reilly 0-4, Roisin Rainey Hannah O’Neill & Emma Sullivan 1 goal; each. Sarah Whalley 1 point.

The final score after extra time O’Toole’s 5-5 Syls 3-5.

There was a certain amount of disappointment after the final but the girls gave everything they could in with almost 3 hours of football between the two days. There was more of an air of celebration in the Club House in Malahide later on when the girls were presented with their medals. The Player of the Féile would have to be Seanna Reilly who despite a hamstring injury still managed to score 7-17 over the two days. It was obvious that she was playing through the pain barrier. Things could have been a lot different if she was at full fitness. Emma Sullivan also played much of the time with a tendon injury and also still managed to score three goals.

Great credit should go to the management team of Brian Sullivan, Dave McEvoy & Cliodhna McCaul. This team gave absolutely everything and could not have put in a greater effort. The represented St Sylvester’s GAA with real honour.
