Tá an áthas orm an chorn seo a glacha ar san foireann Naomh Sailbheastar

Maith an fearr Enda O'Flaithearta, captáin foireann iomána Naomh Sailbheastar. Enda gave us a Joe McDonagh style speech in accepting the Leinster Club Special Junior Hurling trophy after our 2-11 to 1-8 victory over a fine sporting Edenderry team at Broomfield today. It was a victory we fully deserved and caps a great season for Syls Hurling at all grades. Sunday night at the club was special with the Inter Footballers and the Inter Hurlers (with our many dual stars - the same Enda, Alan Morris, David Keogh, Mannix Ryan, Ronan Kennedy, Andrew Richardson) celebrating together. GREAT STUFF LADS. Pats O'Leary capped it all with a song penned specially for the occasion. Syls Abú, tá an áthas orainn go léir.

Leinster Club Special Junior Hurling Final

St Sylvester’s (Dublin) v Edenderry (Offaly) Sunday 6th of December, Malahide, Referee Alan Lagrue (Kildare

St Sylvester’s 2-11 Edenderry 1-8

The low winter sun and soft ground were far from ideal conditions for hurling and a strong wind favoured Sylvester’s in the opening half. Both teams entered wholeheartedly into the early exchanges with Edenderry gaining an early advantage. Mattie Moore scored the goal to settle Edenderry nerves and Bill Glennon and Sean Og Farrell added points with Cillian Farrell also converting his frees. For Sylvester’s David Keogh scored an excellent point from play and Martin Ormonde was converting frees. Two goals before half time from Conor McCafferty and Fergus Rooney gave Sylvester’s a vital lead of 2-5 to 1-4 at the break as they faced into a very stiff wind for the second half.

The second half began with early pressure by Edenderry and more converted frees by Cillian Farrell. Hilary Murray- Hession in goal for Sylvester’s was busy sweeping up behind a very solid full back line and he was picking out blue jerseys with his clearances. Colm O’ Connor came in off his wing to score a much needed point for the home side. The tackling and closing down by the whole Sylvester’s team was of the highest quality and commitment was total. Martin Ormonde was scoring and converting the all important frees. A disallowed goal did not disrupt the concentration.

The backs were winning all their individual duels. Alan Morris, Enda Flaherty and Darragh Flaherty were dominating at half back. Ian McCafferty was his usual brilliant at full back and Patrick O Leary and Damien Rooney on either side of him were driving into the challenges. The intensity was palpable.

The half forward line of Fergus Rooney, Conor McCafferty and David Keogh were busy and clever in possession. Kieran Falvey and Tom Reddy at corner forward foraged and fought like full backs. Donal Hayes and Mannix Ryan came on to add craft and experience. Martin Ormonde brilliantly faded a 65 metre free against the strong wind with great authority to add to his major contribution of 9 points.

David Casey and Ronan Kennedy at midfield were picking up loose ball and making it very difficult for Edenderry to pick out their forwards who failed to score from play in the second half.

The final whistle was greeted with great joy by the large home support. Enda O Flaherty accepted the cup on behalf of the team, the club, the loyal supporters and especially the people who have toiled away in the background for many years. The biggest cheer of the day went to living legends Danny O’Connor and Jim Wardick. Others were there in spirit and the spirit is alive and well in Malahide.
