Memories are made of days like this! 34 players and 19 parents left Malahide at 9.30 on a damp, cold Sunday morning but by the time we passed Bray all we could see ahead was glorious sunshine. By that stage the bus was rocking to Sponge Bob Square Pants as the kids sung away with gusto to the DVD. We were on our way to play a hurling and football challenge against Glynn-Barntown of Wexford, home club of Una Deneher and recent Wexford Senior Hurling Champions.

The reception we got from the host club was great, thanks to all who provided huge amounts of buns, cakes, sandwiches and tea, we were worried for a while that with all the buns we were being softened up. Glynn put up a huge challenge to us on the pitch though. We played 2 13 a side hurling matches and 2 14 a side football matches and all games where hugely competitive winning both football matches and the A hurling match. All the lads enjoyed the feeling of playing a real big sided game, togging out in the dressing room before, wide pitches and a competitive opponent. Daragh McLoughney lined up against his Wexford cousin, David Deneher had his grandfather watching and it was a proud day for all players as they represented their club and County with great enthusiasm and no little skill.

Once again thanks to Glynn Barntown for all their help and we hope to welcome them up to Bridgefield soon. After the match it was back to the coach for the short trip to Wexford Park to cheer on the Dublin Hurlers. The lads all sang with gusto throughout the match and the Dubs responded in fine style with a great display of good, fast, one touch hurling to dispatch the Yellow Bellies. After the match the kids all stormed out to greet the victors and were treated to 34 Syls players bedecked in their club jerseys going through the warm down, stretch by stretch, shoulder to shoulder with their hero’s. The kids enjoyed it and I think the Dubs did too!

After a quick refuelling stop in Enniscorthy it was straight back to Malahide. It was a tired bus that pulled in to the Mall but a bus full of extremely happy kids. We learned a huge amount and we had great fun. We are already saving up for our next trip and would ask all parents and club people to support our Fundraising Social Quiz on Friday 25th March. Thanks to all the parents for your help, the players for their enthusiasm, Jimmy and Una Deneher for all the organisation, Padraig Furlong for directions and O’Grady Coaches for their support.
