U10 hurlers rise to challenge against Brigids

The U10 Hurlers continued their campaign in beautiful Bridgefield on Saturday with a tough couple of games against St Brigids. Watching Brigids go through an impressive warm up we knew that if our attitude was not right then we would be well beaten but both teams rose to the challenge.

In the B game Brigids showed a lot of skill and a determination and ability
to get the ball in to their hand from an early stage. Ronan Furlong and Jojo
Thabo put in huge shifts at midfield holding our team together as we looked
like being swamped. Stephen Brady mashalled the defence well along with
Killian Bousfield and a couple of great saves by Conor Mulcahy kept the
score down. Suddenly coming up to half time Conor Duffy roused our team with
a series of tremendous challenges and we turned 0-0 to 1-1 down. We started
the second half fast and Craig McGrattan was all over the pitch breaking
ball and feeding the forwards. Joaquin Shinbach made a welcome return to us
and his energy and skill was a huge boost as we drove forward to get back in
to the game. Matthew Brenner latched on to a loose ball in midfield,
gathered and shot from 30 yards with the ball dropping just under the cross
bar and we were up and running. Conor O'Brien always poaches a goal and
today was no different, we laid siege to the Brigids goal and Paul Downey
almost levelled the matcha  couple of times before getting us a skill point.
However time just ran out on us and we went down by the single point.
The A match was a cracking game of skill and intensity and while we scored a
total of 3 goals and  2 points, with David Deneher and Conor Hoyne helping
themselves to 1-1 apiece, it was the six skill points we got for hooking
that ultimately led to our 3 point victory. This was reflective of a
fiercely determined full team performance which got the better of their
Brigid’s opponents.

Inspired as usual by the two heartbeats of the team, Euan Farquarson &
Daragh McLoughney, the game also featured brilliant “A” debuts by Aaron
Lambe and Krishna Joyce. Jack Boyne continued to display a willingness to
take each game by the scruff of the neck; likewise Sean Guiden also
typically hurled a huge amount of ball. Timmy O’Connor overcame a bad belt
to make a nuisance of himself up front, while Daire DeBurca was unlucky with
a few efforts himself.
Another feature of the game was the increasing amount of Sylvester’s players
attempting overhead catches. While these didn’t always come off, it was
great to see the effort and it won’t be long before these are all sticking.
We just came out ahead at the final whistle 15pts - 12pts. While we just got
the better of Brigids on this occassion they are a very good side and one we
will have many more battles with over the coming years.
Attitude could not be faulted on either team and it seemed the bonding trip
to Wexford paid dividends as each and every player supported and helped his
teammates. Well done to all.
