U12 A Hurlers start with a win

While our B team had a bye, the U12 A hurlers got their season of to a flying start with a good win over a strong St Vincents team. Due to the weather we haven’t had much opportunity to hurl and that showed in our early play but as the game wore on we got stronger and stronger. As the B’s didn’t have a game it gave us the opportunity to add a few subs so we went out with 16 players while the opposition could only muster 12.

Starting against the wind we knew all our players needed to be disciplined and keep tight. Full back Daragh McLoughney was immense, catching ball after ball and driving them back down the field, Matthew Brenner at corner back aided in keeping the inside line locked down and goalie Killian Bousfield dealt well with any threats that got through.

Our half back line of Andrew Roe, Dylan Andrews and Tom Bennett (Tom got a lovely point in the second half to cap a fine individual display)were physically dominant and holding their positions which put an iron curtain across our outer defence. In midfield Jack Boyne and Tom Hogan hurled a lot of ball against 2 strong opposition players. Conor Hoyne intelligently led the forward line, laying off balls and creating space for the best player on the pitch, Eoghan Buckley to exploit. Eoghan finished with a personal tally of 2-2 with the two points especially being brilliant strikes.

Ronan Furlong was a bundle of energy, Euan Farquarson hooked and blocked and kept a very strong player quiet, Aaron Lambe Callaghan got our last goal and was always threatening and Ollie Twomey thundered in to the game when we needed him, picking up a lot of ball which he always uses intelligently. Thomas Lynch continues to improve and won a lot of important ball at full and half forward.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the performance was how well everyone fought for each other, the trust each player had in his team mate – we passed the ball well to each other rather than going on solo’s. This was a hard earned win as we made life difficult for ourselves with a lot of wasted chances, however for the first game out against a strong side we got a good result and its onwards and upwards in the grading leagues for us.
