U12 footballers - best display yet

St. Sylvesters 6-16 Naomh Mearnog 1-7 Syls U12As extended their league winning streak to 5 games with a comprehensive win at Bridgefield over local rivals Naomh Mearnog. As the sun came out, the boys from Portmarnock were feeling the heat from the start as Syls put on their finest display of the season so far.

Bolstered by the return of ace marksmen Sean Daly and Jack Whelan, the boys in blue were first to every breaking ball. Some of their interplay was of the highest order as the defence and midfield worked cleverly to feed their forwards in good scoring positions. Supported by a decent wind, Syls racked up a score of 3-10 to 0-1 by half time, with Sean and Jack combining for the lion’s share of the scores. These were complemented by points from Osian Dullaghan and Daniel Deneher from midfield, Daniel Brennan in attack and another from Luke Hughes exploding from the half back line.

Naomh Mearnog responded in the second half, making use of the wind to chalk up a few scores of their own. However, with Aaron Lynch talking care of their danger man, ably assisted by Mikey Dowling and Ben O’Neill, there was little danger of a comeback from the neighbours. Syls continued to add to the scoreboard, cleverly changing their approach to adapt to the windy conditions. Harry Barnes in goal was the instigator of several attacks from deep defensive positions and the Syls boys had enough confidence in their handling and their team mates to build patient attacks throughout the second period. Gavin Hydes and Ben O’Neill added their names to the scoresheet while Bryan Murray and Josh Rheinhart came on  to keep their opponents at bay.

But the stars of an outstanding team performance were Jack Whelan (2-6) and Sean Daly (2-4) who were too hot to handle for a disconsolate Mearnog defence.
