U12 hurlers great win over Mount Sion and at Cashel in Tipperary

Sylvester’s U12 hurlers were invited to take part in a tournament organised by Cashel King Cormac’s, with Knockavilla Kickhams also from Tipperary, Mount Sion of Waterford and Naomh Barrog from Dublin.
In our first match against Cashel we got off to a slow start and were down 2:00 to 0:02 at half time. Our back line of Jamie Kennedy, Mark McCormack and Luke Troy got on top in the second half and stopped the Cashel attack. Our midfield of Luke Hughes and Eamonn Mc Loughney supplied quality ball to the forward line where Daniel Danagher and Barry Cross scored vital goals. Daniel Murphy scored a great free from half way leaving us with a one point lead in injury time. Cashel got a late free to draw the game 2:03 to 2:03.

The next game against Knockavilla Kickhams proved to be a one sided affair with Syls getting on top early on. Mickey Meaney did a great man marking job on their best player limiting him to one point. With two goals in either half Eoin Cooney provided lethal in front of gaols and was ably assist with goals from Dennis O’Brien, Daniel Danagher, and James Kiernan and points from Eamonn McLoughney and Daniel Murphy. The winning margin was 8:03 to 2:02.

With Mount Sion wining all their matches, our match with them would decide the winner of the tournament. In a hard fought game Syls rose to the occasion and played some of the best hurling we have seen them play. The lads were immense all over the field and fought for every ball.  The back line of Niall McCann, Jamie Kennedy and Mark Mc Cormack kept the Mount Sion attach at bay and when called upon Sean Drumm made some fine saves. Ciaran Murphy battled hard in the half forward line with Philip Ryan and they provided quality ball to the forward line. With three minutes remaining and the scores level Daniel Murphy put floated a ball in from the wing which was caught by Eoin Cooney and he drove it into the net. Mount Sion threw everything they had at us but Jamie, Mark and Mickey defended like their lives depended on it and won every challenge. Eamonn McLoughney had a great game in midfield and with Luke Hughes scored two late points to seal a great win 2:06 to 2:01.

The last game against Naomh Barrog was an anticlimax with our lads well on top and they ran out easy winners on a score line of 2:05 to no score.

It was a great day out with some fantastic games of hurling, the experience of playing at a different intensity for the lads, and returning from Tipperary with a win under your belt is always a good feeling.
