U14 hurlers win of table toppers Lucan

St.Sylvesters 4 – 8 Lucan Sarsfields 1 – 6 Syls under 14 hurlers had a good win against Top of the table Lucan Sarsfields on Saturday last at Bridgefield. Although having to line out without team regulars Jamie Kennedy who got injured in training on Wednesday last and Niall McCann ( both of whom attended the game ) who has been ill Syls got off to a horror start with Lucan registering 1 goal and two points before Syls got off the mark with a well taken point by Eamonn McLoughney.

Lucan tagged on another two points before Syls registered their first goal of the day when Mikey Meaney crashed the ball to the Lucan net. Syls were now playing some fine hurling and continued to dominate exchanges right up to half time. With the scores level on the break it was felt within the Syls camp that a win was well on the cards . Lucan were playing to go top of the division and are a good determined unit .

The second half started with the Sylvesters boys tearing into it from the start and first drawing level and taking the lead which they never surrendered . The second half was a very hard fought and close affair with some brilliant hurling from both sides . But if ever a team ( and that word I mean ) came of age it was on Saturday last in the Bridgefield . There were some heroic displays from our boys . From Barry Crosse ,Denis O brien and Conor O Byrne  in the full forward line not letting the Lucan full back line getting the ball out beyond 21 yard line . It was as good a display of full forward play and selfless workrate in the interests of the team all the way back to Philip Ryan , Cathal Manning  and Mark McCormack in the full back line.

During the game Syls introduced all 5 substitutes ( Brian Walsh , Ciaran Murphy , Shane Mohan , Adam Fitzpatrick and Evan Walsh ) and it proves that a good team ethic and workrate will move mountains for you . Some great displays were performed on the day . Philip Ryan marshalled the full back line brilliantly , to Eoin Ryan who had arguably his best ever game at left half back to Mikey Meaney who was brilliant at Right half back and Eoin Cooney who scored 2 goals and a point from midfield . Bryn Redmond put in a terrific display of determined , skilful , gutsy hurling at midfield .

Luke Hughes and Daniel Deneher who were both excellent in the forward line. I must make special mention however of Daniel Murphy in goal. Daniel who normally lines out at midfield for us was asked to play in goal in order to bolster the defence and not only did he do so magnificently but did so without protest in order to further the ambitions of the team.

We are used to giving “slight” praise to Eamonn McLoughney for his overall play but on Saturday last even Eamonn played better than he usually does – I don’t know how . But to Eamonn I would say that his was one of the most skilful , daring and brave displays I have ever seen on any hurling field !

Well done boys you did your familys and your club proud on Saturday last !
