St Sylvesters Under 9 hurlers lined out against Scoil Uí Conaill in the Castle grounds on Saturday morning for the second last league game of the season.
On Pitch 1 despite being on top we struggled for scores up to half
time. Aaron Lambe-Callaghan and Craig McGrattan dominated the midfield sending
ball after ball in to the forwards but we failed to capitalize other than from a
Matthew Brenner goal. Billy Lawlor also went close when he worked a shooting
opportunity but from a tight angle his ground shot went just wide Killian
Bousfield at centre back let little past him and launched a number of trademark
long clearances. A defensive mix up however had us turning level. There must
have been something magical in the half time water however as suddenly all the
Syls players sprang in to life. Krishna Joyce now operating in defence was at
the top of his game and nothing went by him. Ace poacher Conor O’Brien
pounced to put us ahead, Niall Smyth who ran and ran all game grabbed a quick
goal and a point from way out the field while Daniel Stone, switched to
midfield put in a storming run to crash in a great goal. A late goal from all
action Euan Farquarson ensured the victory which was capped by a majestic point
from out on the wing by Matthew Brenner. A real fighting second half display
which augers well for the next day.
On Pitch 2, in a match they dominated from start to finish the
Syls lads worked hard from the start and displayed excellent hurling skills
most notably by Tom Bennett and Sean Guiden in midfield and great fighting
spirit by Karl Keane and Sean Curren in defence. Highlight of the day
were the 3 extra skill points for overhead catches, one each from Sean Guiden
and Jack Boyne but most notably one by Timmy O'Connor which Aisake O' Halpin
himself would have been proud of ! Conor Hoyne was determined to finish as top
scorer in this game and was picking off points at will, while Simon Murphy,
Jack Boyne and Ollie Twomey all contributed nice scores. David Deneher nipped
in late on for his usual poachers goal as the Syls lads ran out easy winners in
the end by a scoreline of 4:6 to 1:0. All in all a very commanding display by
the home team who have certainly made great progress this year and finished off
the season in impressive style.
