A Brave Performance not enough from 16B's

The Syl's u16B footballers fell at the last hurdle in their bid for championship glory. The lads put in a great performance but ultimately their opponents Naomh Fionnbarra proved too strong and ran out 3-9 to 2-2 winners in a game played in Peregrine's, Mulhuddard. Naomh Fionnbarra are a one team club at this age level and they started the game as hot favourites having won their semi by 15 points and having run up an aggregate score of 18-41 in their previous 3 encounters in the championship.

Playing against the breeze in the first half our lads hung tough and took the lead in the 15th minute with a very well taken goal by Colm Casey. Some stout defending and some brilliant saves from goalkeeper Sean O'Connor kept the game tight. Finbar's led 1-5 to 1-0 at the end of the half.

The second half started brightly for Syls - they started to win a lot of ball in midfield and it looked like Finbars were struggling to cope - but then midway through the half and somewhat against the run of play; they struck for a goal. In truth they never looked back after that despite a hugely committed performance from the Syl's lads who were rewarded for their efforts when midfielder Osian Dullaghan finished a fine solo-effort to the net with 5 minutes left to play.

Alas it was too little too late. The lads were understandably disappointed to be beaten but they did themselves and their club proud in getting to the final and putting in such a good performance.

A special mention has to be made for Marcelo Belgrano. Marcelo is a Spaniard and and Athletico Marid fan who has studied here for the year and played for the team. As far as we know he and Xavi Alonso are the only 2 Spanish players in Madrid with championship medals. We hope this is some small consolation to Marcelo as he recovers from 2 defeats yesterday.

Lastly as we break for the exams - I'd like to wish everybody who is taking an exam the best. I feel sure that if they put the same energy and committement into their studies that we saw yesterday in Mulhuddard they will have no problems.
